CHALLENGERS Overview • CHALLENGERS is a Specific Support Actionproject funded in FP6 • CHALLENGERS builds towards a pragmatic action plan to make “Service Oriented Knowledge Utility (SOKU)”,“Service Oriented Infrastructures (SOI)”,“Service Oriented Architectures (SOA)”,“Next Generation Grids (NGG)”a beneficial and profitable reality Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

From the Vision to theResearch Agenda • The way ahead: • to link specific “component technologies” (CTs) to specific application and technology needs • to focus research on improving technologies within a visionary context • Non Functional Requirements-centric approach: • Specific needs expressed in terms of a set of Non Functional Requirements (NFRs) by a Grid platform. NFR have been drawn from distinct research areas: Middleware, Knowledge engineering, Core resources, Software and Service Engineering and others. • Top-Down Approach: From the visionary applications to the NFRs and the research topics • Bottom-Up Approach: From the component technologies to the dependent technical properties • The “maturity” aspect and the identified dependencies are the key-factors that define research challenges of the future Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

From the Research Agenda to the Roadmap • Prioritization of the Grids’ benefits (non-functional requirements) and the associated research challenges according to: • importance for the evolution of the future Grids • present status and performance • a context that defines a process for technology advancements • Prioritization over short-mid (5-years) and long (10-years) term future • Visualization of prioritized topics based onPriority MatrixandPriority Chart Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

CHALLENGERS’ Research Agenda :Mid Term Vision • “Democratization” of the usage of the Grid-based infrastructures and Grid-based services: • Effort to reach a wide spectrum of end-users, with emphasis to “customers” and home users allowing easy and multi-purpose interaction. • Promote ubiquity, interconnectedness at any leveland“life in the open & on the move” • by building universal, flexible and real-time distributed platforms equipped with combined sensors and displays (PDAs, cellular devices, SoCs, etc) • Promote people’s trends to online digital communities and social networking activities • “Visionary Applications” with Grid-enabled and sensor-enriched services: • Social networking and collaborative users communities enriched with novel applications (e.g. augmented reality) • Sensor-enriched infrastructures, for user to act as a sensor and for Monitoring Situation & Context e.g. health monitoring • Scientific Grids -> Sensors + Experiments a combination of simulation and measurements Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

CHALLENGERS’ Research Agenda:Long Term Vision • Transition from data/information to knowledge-based communication and interaction • Reliable semantic description of numerous aspects of life improvement, business and social, psychological and cognitive sciences • Development of knowledge-assisted processes for cognition-based decision on behalf of user • Applications of Grids based on electronic economy, protection of human life and infrastructures to mission critical applications • Enhancement of autonomic properties of infrastructures • Advanced abilities for Decision Making and Control • Reach economies of scale and cost efficiency • Personalisation of applications based on psychology and cognition principles Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

CHALLENGERS’ Roadmap Mid-Term Path: • Research for usability of services through multi-purpose and multi-modal, intelligent interfaces • Improvement of performance and manageability of Hardware and networks (the backbone of infrastructures) achieving: • efficient computer architectures • parallel and distributed computing principles • intelligent and seamless connectivity • Enhancement of “by-design” aspect emphasizing in Qos and Security High priorities in Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

CHALLENGERS’ RoadmapLong-Term Path: • Increase the ability to tackle the managerial overhead of large scale Grids • Improvement of scalability and dependability delegated to automated mechanisms • Allow a human oriented communication developing formal methods to succeed abstraction in design, development and operation of infrastructures High priorities in Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives

Forthcoming CHALLENGERS Event SSOKU09: 1st European Conference on Software Services and SOKU technologies Brussels, 13-14 January 2009 • Jointly organised by the CHALLENGERS and 3S Projects • Goal: to discuss the future of Grids, Software and Service Oriented Architectures • More than 200 experts, including: • high level researchers, top industrial and political representatives from the European Commission and from national authorities • The programme features: • Plenary sessions with VIP speakers from research and business • Parallel sessions on Research, Business, Standards and Non-Technical Challenges • Exhibition and networking • Closure of the event with an EC information presentation • Synchronised with the OGF-Europe Workshop on Cloud Computing Priorities for Future Research on Grids EU & International Perspectives
