Parent Involvement: Academic Impact on Students Did you know…? • Decades of research show that when parents are involved students have: Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates Better school attendance Increased motivation, better self-esteem Lower rates of suspension Decreased use of drugs and alcohol Fewer instances of violent behavior • Family participation in education was twice as predictive of students’ academic success as family socioeconomic status.   3. This year the Literacy and Acculturation Center is making strides towards increasing family literacy. Through our partnership with Barnes and Noble we will be hosting four family literacy nights. Students who attend with their families will receive a book for their personal libraries. Literacy Night events will be conducted quarterly on Thursday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 PM: • October 4, 2012 • December 6, 2012 • February 7, 2013 • May 9, 2013 There will be a member of the ELL staff at each event to greet families and conduct the program. Participating Barnes and Noble locations for literacy nights: • South Tampa • Carrollwood • Brandon • Wiregrass Literacy Nights Barnes and Noble Booksellers

  4. Last year the Literacy and Acculturation Center launched the Parents K12 parent portal at eleven school sites. This year, Mrs. Elia has taken the initiative district-wide! This free on-line resource will allow all HCPS parents, students, and teachers to access 1200+ activities and resources. This tool is available in three languages: English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Once logged in, users can read and listen to activities in the language of their choice. Features: • Aligned to the new Common Core standards • Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies content for grades K-8 • Study Skills for grades K-12 • College Readiness for grades 9-12 • Career Readiness for grades 9-12 • Easy to navigate drop-down menus (similar to A+RISE) InSyncEducation

  5. The InSync Education parent portal will be” launched” some time during the month of September, so bo on the lookout for the logo on the district website! District-wide users will be able to log into the parent portal once they have created an account. The process is quick and simple. • Navigate to the HCPS website www.sdhc.k12.fl.usand click on the InSync logo. • Enter our district code: HCPS • Click the “start” button and complete the brief, on-line form Encourage parents at your site to take advantage of this comprehensive resource! This would make a great PLC activity! As a point of information, parents will be asked to enter/create an email account; this is necessary for registration purposes.   6. The Literacy and Acculturation Center (LAC) website is up to date. http://iac.mysdhc.org • PowerPoint presentations for use with faculty and staff or at PLCs are up to date. Additional presentations will be added to the site throughout the year. • Parent surveys, Rosetta Stone license requests, and Telephonic Interpreter forms for the 2012-2013 school year are now available on the site. • The new LAC Newsletter, Kaleidoscope, is now available for download under the Parent Leadership Council tab, along with the informational flyer for the October Literacy Night. • A link to MyOn has been added to the Parent Resources page. • Links to district web pages for parents have been updated to include the Wellness Integration for Students of Hillsborough site.http://wish.mysdhc.org • An “En Español” link has been added to the Parent resources page. LAC & ELL websites ELL Programs website is being re-developed to meet the needs of all stakeholders.
