  1. John, chapter 2 • NIV John 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  4. But is this correct… • Jospehus said that Cana of Galilee lay in the Plain of Asochis which would include Khirbet Qana, not Kefr Kenna.

  6. John, chapter 2 • The most zealous of the Jews, the Essenes, believed it was wrong to partake in the open celebratory joys of life. • Right off the bat, we do not see Jesus supporting this. • He wants to share our joys and good times alongside us.

  7. John, chapter 2 • 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come."

  8. F.F. Bruce • Jesus Himself had become married since Mary had last seen Him. Jesus betrothed Himself to His Church in Baptism. Mary doesn’t know that all familial responsibilities are now subordinate to His new calling. • Mary did not know what Jesus would do, but knew it had to be the right thing.

  9. John, chapter 2 • In Eden, a married couple thought they would be lacking if the Lord and His will were present. • Here we see that we are blessed with His presence.

  10. John, chapter 2 • 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

  11. John, chapter 2 • Jews washed many things as a way to consecrate something to the Lord. • This was part of the Law given by Moses. • NIV John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. • The Law revealed the consequence and guilt of sin.

  12. Ceremonial Washing • NIV Exodus 19:10 And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes • NIV Exodus 19:14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. • NIV Exodus 30:19 Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it.

Ceremonial Washing • NIV Exodus 40:32 They washed whenever they entered the Tent of Meeting or approached the altar, as the LORD commanded Moses. • NIV Leviticus 8:6 Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. • NIV Leviticus 14:47 Anyone who sleeps or eats in the [unclean] house must wash his clothes.

Ceremonial Washing • NIV Leviticus 13:55 After the affected article has been washed, the priest is to examine it, and if the mildew has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it with fire, whether the mildew has affected one side or the other. • NIV Numbers 8:21 The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD and made atonement for them to purify them. • NIV Deuteronomy 23:11 But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.

  16. John, chapter 2 • 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."

  17. John, chapter 2 • Jesus wants to restore us to joy for His presence – nullifying the law and its rituals. • We no longer have to recognize the Lord. • We want to recognize the Lord.

  18. John, chapter 2 • 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

  19. An application • Marriage is an ordinance of divine appointment. At weddings, couples should delight in the presence, will, and blessing of Christ Jesus, laying the first fruits of their new life together before Him in faith.

  20. John, chapter 2 • 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. 13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
