This document outlines significant changes to BREEAM standards for higher education institutions, particularly focusing on laboratories. It details updates related to energy efficiency, health and safety regulations, and innovative credits for laboratory design and operation. Topics include fume cupboard safety, ventilation system optimization, heat recovery strategies, and continuous improvement through user evaluations. The aim is to support institutions in achieving higher environmental performance and safer laboratory environments, enhancing both user experience and academic research outcomes.

BREEAM CHANGES • BREEAM 2008 general changes- Credit updating, e.g. Energy & EPCs- Revised weightings- Minimum requirements- Innovation and exemplary credits- Post Construction Review • BREEAM HE campus changes • BREEAM HE lab related changes
NEW/MODIFIED CREDITS • HEALTH17- Use of BS CEN 14175 on fume cupboard safety- Explicit H&S sign off • MANAGEMENT1 – Commissioning • MANAGEMENT4 – Building User Guide + 2cnd credit for Laboratory User • MANAGEMENT – Early stage design process
LAB ENERGY CREDITS • Choice from a ‘menu’- up to 5 for larger labs, 3 for medium • Based on expert consultation process • Fume cupboard credits (1.5)- First credit mandatory for labs with fume cupboards • 10 additional half credits
FAN POWER (Watts/Litre/Second) • General laboratory supply air AHUs with heating and cooling - 1.5 • General laboratory extract systems - 1.2 • Laboratory local extract (ducted) – 1.0 • Containment area (no HEPA) - 1.5 • Containment area (HEPA) – 2.5 • Fume cupboard extract – 1.5
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT SHARING EXPERIENCE -User group -User evaluation BUILDING CAPACITY -HE specific training -Sector assessors -Referral service? DRIVING IMPROVEMENT -Innovation credits -Benchmarking-Linking with DECS BREEAM HIGHER EDUCATION EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION -Post occupancy evaluation -BREEAM in Use
VENTILATION CREDITS • Grouping/isolation of high filtration/ventilation activities • Low pressure drop design- optimised duct runs; use of 3D modelling • Specification and achievement of best practice fan power
HEAT AND COOLING CREDITS • Heat recovery- e.g. exhaust air (where no risk of cross-contamination) • Cooling recovery • Grouping of cooling loads • Specification of free cooling coils
SYSTEM INTEGRATION CREDITS • Design integration- a documented process of dialogue and challenge between key suppliers (especially architects and engineers) and users to achieve right sizing; eliminate unecessary contingencies etc. • Load responsiveness- modularity; variable speed drives and pumps etc.
FUME CUPBOARD CREDITS • Credit 1 – Exhaust volume air flow of below 0.16m3/second • Credit 2 – Below 0.12m3/s • Achieved – GSK; Newcastle • Comparison – Traditional CAV 0.25m3/s • Comparison – Cambridge 0.175m3/s • Prerequisite – HEALTH17 (BS 14175) + design team assurance on safety
KEY QUESTIONS • Defining laboratories • Avoiding perverse incentives- fume cupboards and air change rates • Precise credit definitions- design integration- laboratory user guide- low pressure drop design
