  1. Controlling Home Devices with Pen and Paper User Side Computer Side Network Side Why Pen and Paper? • User Friendliness – most users can work with a pen and paper • Known Interface – users will not have to adapt or learn new skills to interact with new technologies in the home • Ease of Use – no longer will users struggle with complicated VCR, washing machine or central heating interfaces + The diagram above illustrates the how the combination of digital pen and paper technology can be used to control devices around the home Details • Digital Pen and Paper devices can be used to control networked appliances around the home. Anoto Functionality represents this digital technology, allowing the user to simply select which appliance they wish to control with merely a flick of the wrist. • The user interacts with Anoto enabled paper forms. Incorporated into the forms is a unique Anoto paper pattern. A form is first created using Adobe Acrobat before the pattern is applied to the paper. • Information recorded on a Pen with its digital camera can either be transferred directly to a PC (via USB) or remotely (using wireless technology such as Bluetooth). • The PC can then issue the user’s command to the home network, detailing which appliances should be turned on and when etc. • The OSGi gateway will be used to communicate with the networked appliances around the home. Development Details • Using the Software Development Kit from Anoto a Page Lookup Service (PLS) can be created. The PLS stipulates what the computer should do when it receives data from a Pen. • Received data is digested by the computer and service commands issued to the relevant devices. • A highlighted feature of this project is that the user simply has to select the devices they wish using the Pen and Paper, they do not have to interact with the computing side in any way.
