  2. Upgrading VMware vCenterServer to 4.1 Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  3. Task: Upgrade vCenter Server from version 4.0 to 4.1 • Upgrade vCenterServer and migrate to a different machine • Upgrade the existing vCenterDatabase (SQL Express) and migrate to SQL 2008 instance. • Export vCenterServer settings to new vCenter Server. • Tools: VMware Data Migration Tool • Back up vCenter Server configuration such as Port Settings, SSL Certificates, and licensing • information. • Back up vCenterDatabase if SQL Server Express is local to vCenter server. • Back up vCenter Orchestrator configuration (if installed) • Back up vCenter Update Manager (if installed) Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  4. Prerequisites: • VirtualCenter2.5 and its update releases • vCenter Server 4.0 and its update • Stop VMware VirtualCenter Service • VMware vCenter Server 4.1 installation media Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  5. Procedure: Backup • Mount installation media on source vCenterServer • Browse to \datamigrationfolder • Extract datamigration.zip to local file system (c:\tmp\datamigration) • Open Command Prompt, change to datamigrationfolder and type backup.bat • Respond to the script prompts • - Check \logs\backup.login datamigration folder for errors • - Sample:INFO] [backup] vSphere configuration backup script completed successfully Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  6. Procedure: Restore • Install 64-Bit ODBC driver on destination vCenter Server • Create 64-Bit DSN and test connectivity to destination SQL Database • Copy datamigration folder from source machine to destination machine • Mount installation media on destination machine • Open Command Prompt, change to datamigrationfolder and type install.bat • Respond to the script prompts. • Be sure to select Upgrade existing vCenter Server databaseand I have taken a backup of the existing vCenter Server database and SSL Certificates • Check \logs\restore.login datamigration folder for errors • Sample error: ERROR] [restore] Error: unsupported operand type(s) for +: 'NoneType' and 'str' Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  7. Restore Error: Possible Cause • vCenter Server IP address is different from source • vCenter Server computer name is different from source • vCenter Update Manager misconfiguration • install.batexecuted without Local Administrator rights Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  8. Workaround: Manually migrate vCenter Database and Settings • Browse to \datamigration\data\vc folder on destination machine • Select vc_source_orig_dbfile and rename to vc_source_orig_db.bak Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  9. Workaround: Manually migrate vCenter Database and Settings • Copy vc_source_orig_db.bakto destination SQL server • Use SQL Server Management Studio to restore vc_source_orig_db.bakto existing vCenter • database Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  10. Workaround: Manually migrate vCenter Database and Settings • Browse to \datamigration\data\vc\vc_ssl folder on destination machine Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  11. Workaround: Manually migrate vCenter Database and Settings • Copy SSL keys to c:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL • * Note: If you cannot see the Program Data folder: Press the <Alt> key on the keyboard. Kingston Technology Company, Inc.

  12. Workaround: Manually migrate vCenter Database and Settings • Restart VMware VirtualCenter Service • Log into vSphere Client and verify settings have been imported. • - Celebrate if successful! Kingston Technology Company, Inc.
