Appropriate Population • Ages 8 and above • Depending on cognitive and physical abilities • Older age group • Arthritis, MS, clients who have had a stroke • Women may enjoy it more than men • Children • Increase recognition, promote learning of social norms through sharing, increase sustained attention span

Therapeutic Benefits • The Psychosocial benefits- promotes sharing and caring, by creating the frame to be given as a gift • promotes adherence to social norms involved with sharing and materials • possibly promote  social interaction if  processing questions are used in therapeutic setting  involving clients  sharing their inspiration for their decorative design of frame. • Rehabilitative benefits - relief of symptoms for those with arthritis in the hands and building up of fine motor skills for those who may be lacking due to stroke or multiple sclerosis

Upgrades and Downgrades • Cognitive: RECOGNITION • Baseline: fairly detailed instruction, not objects labeled, and verbal cues • Downgrade: “paint by numbers” • a handout with detailed instructions. Have tools and materials labeled according to what they will be used for and in the correct sequence. • Upgrade: provide an example of the completed project only and allow client to determine what materials they need and how they will complete the task

  8. Upgrades and Downgrades • Motor: FINE MOTOR • Baseline: Using fingers to peel the egg and place the shell pieces • Downgrades: Have prepared egg shell pieces that have already been removed from eggs • Upgrades: Have client break up egg shell into smaller pieces

Materials for today • Tools: Scissors,hot glue gun, gun, sponge paint brushes, scissors, hair dryers, small plastic or Styrofoam plates for Mod Podge, Styrofoam plates to mix paints • Materials: Pre-assembled picture frames, hard boiled & painted eggs to provide egg shells, ribbons to hang picture frames, acrylic paints, Mod Podge, newspaper to cover surface of desks, paper towels, glue sticks for glue gun, glitter, food coloring to dye Mod Podge(if desired), and puff paint • Equipment: Medium to large desk or table, chairs to sit in

Instructions • Gather tools and materials • Peel and remove egg shell from egg and membrane • Pour 1-2 Tbsp of Mod Podge onto plate, add food coloring if desired • Use brush to apply colored mod Podge to frame, in small sections, no bigger than a 2 inch square • Use finger to apply shell pieces to wet area, sharp points against the frame and press (hear it crack) • Repeat Step 4 until entire frame is covered • Pour another Tbsp Mod Podge onto plate • Cover entire frame in a light coat of uncolored M.P. • Apply additional decorations: glitter, puff paint, ribbon • Allow frame to dry

  13. Precautions • Please be aware that: • This is going to be messy. Be mindful of sharing your space. • Mod Podge is non-toxic, but does smell • Make sure to get the membrane peeled away from the shell. • Don’t make your shell pieces too small • Watch out for sneezes • Optional Equipment: • Hot glue gun and hairdryer are hot • Tooth-pics have sharp ends
