Founder of NBC: • - Born on February 27, 1891 in Uzlian, Russia. • Sarnoff was an immigrant who climbed the rungs of corporate America to head the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) . • In 1927 Sarnoff was elected to RCA's board and during the summer of 1928, he became RCA's acting president . • Sarnoff died in his sleep December 12,1971. The Early Years of NBC: • The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) was established in 1926. • NBC started out as a telephone company station called WEAF in New York City. • In the beginning NBC was owned by RCA (Radio Corporation of America). • An early accomplishment was NBC established two national radio networks, the Red Network(with 25 stations) and the Blue Network (With 6 stations). • The purpose of NBC is to provide news and entertainment programs to millions of listeners.

The Early Years of NBC: (cont.) • NBC’s first concert was on January 1, 1925 when it present a concert by noted Irish tenor John McCormick and Metropolitan opera star LucreziaBori. • Although NBC started off as a radio network in • the 1920s, it was not until the 1940s that NBC • evolved into a television broadcaster. • In 1932 RCA became the sole owner of NBC. • -In 139 NBC began regular telecast in New York City.

Changes of NBC over time: • Film makers like Robert Young and Albert Wasserman developed light weight, portable 16mm cameras and sound equipment. • The new technology made it easier for them to capture areas more easily and less obstructively than before with the much larger equipment. • NBC soon began to expand along with its expanding popularity. It now consisted of five NBC-owned stations plus some 210 affiliated stations. • The NBC radio network now includes 8 NBC-owned stations and about 300 affiliated stations. • Up until 1965, NBC was the major manufacturer of color sets.

Why NBC caught America’s eye: -NBC was especially known for its live drama and variety programs. -Programs such as “The White Paper” which was a notable series of investigation documentaries was one of NBC most popular shows. -Due to NBC’s popular show Saturday Night Live, comedy returned to television in the 1970s. - The U2 Affair and The Death of Stalin were two of the first television shows that put NBC on the map.

It set industry standards in technology and programming. • Reaches over 175 million home worldwide. • It’s a diverse international media company. • -NBC is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies in the development, production, and marketing of entertainment, news, and information to a global audience. • -”NBC owns and operates a valuable portfolio of news and entertainment television networks, a premier motion picture company, significant television production operations, a leading television stations group, and world-renowned theme parks.”

  8. Fun/Interesting Facts: • NBC I soften referred to as the “Peacock Network” because of its peacock styled logo. • NBC’s signal is estimated reaching 99% of all homes in America. • General Electric bought NBC for $6.4 billion dollars from RCA. • NBC began broadcasting color shows in 1954.
