  1. PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION

  2. Hello!

  3. PSYCHOLOGY The word “psychology” comes from the Greek word (Psyche mean Soul, Logos mean Science), thus the meaning of Psychology is the science of soul. It is the science of behavior, the activities of animate creature, which can be observed and measured in an objective way.It provides a basis for the teaching and learning process. It also provides the key to know the individual differences and meets them with appropriate educational programmes.

  4. Three Groups of Learning:1. Behaviorism or Association Theories2. Cognitive-Information Processing Theories3. Humanistic Theories

  5. Behaviorist Psychology -Introduced in 1913 by John B. Watson, an American psychologist. Believed that observable behavior, not inner experience, was the only reliable source of information. They also stressed the importance of the environment in shaping an individual's behavior. They looked for connections between observable behavior and stimuli from the environment. `

  6. According to Behaviorists:-Learning should be organized in order that students can experience success in the process of mastering the subject matter.-The method is introduced in a step by step manner with proper sequencing of task which is viewed by other educational psychologist as simplistic and mechanical.

  7. Cognitive Psychology • -Psychologists focus their attention on how individuals process information and how they monitor and manage thinking.

  8. According to Cognitive Theorists: -Learning constitutes a logical method for organizing and interpreting learning. -Teachers use a lot of problem and thinking skills in teaching and learning like reflective thinking, creative thinking, intuitive thinking, discovery learning and many others.

  9. Humanistic Psychology-Humanist Psychologist are concerned with how learners can develop their human potential

  10. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts"

  11. According to Humanistic Psychologists: • -Curriculum is concerned with the process not the products; personal needs not subject matter, psychological meaning and environmental situations. • -

  12. Psychology-has a great influence in the curriculum. Learners are not machines and the mind is not a computer. Humans are biological beings affected by their biology and their cultures. The Psychological Foundations will help curriculum makers in nurturing a more advanced, more comprehensive and complete human learning.

  13. Social Foundations of Education

School &Society  Society as the source of change  Schools as agents of change  Knowledge as an agent of change Considered Two (2) Fundamental Elements:  Schools  Civil Society Major topics needing attention and reconstruction to encourage experimental intelligence and plurality John Dewey (1859-1952)
