September 18: How to Get Into Medical School A Presentation and Panel Discussion to Demystify the Medical School Admissions Process Carol Terregino, MD, Interim Senior Associate Dean for Education at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and a panel of medical students will discuss the medical school admission process; what schools look for in applicants; the relative importance of grades, standardized test scores, and extra-curricular activities. 2. September 25: The Science of Early Childhood Education How Do Babies Grow and Adapt to Their Environment? Svidya Naganathan, MD, a pediatrician at the K Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, will address one of the wonders of life and review neurodevelopmental milestones and motor development. After the lecture, students will observe babies in small groups and identify their ages based on a their new understanding of development. 3. October 2: Superbugs: Why Doesn’t That Antibiotic Work Anymore? A Review of a Key Public Health Issue of Our Time Just in time for the start of cold and flu season, this presentation will focus on the critical topic of antibiotic resistance. Kathleen Casey, MD, Chief of Infectious Disease at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, will lead this discussion. After the lecture, students will work in small groups to identify bacteria under microscopes. 4. October 9: The Epidemic of Obesity and Diabetes What is the Basic Science Underlying These National Epidemics? David Kountz, MD, will address both of these issues. How much is genetic vs. environmental? Is there one best diet? After the lecture, students, will participate in a workshop teaching principles of healthy eating with a live cooking demonstration. 5. October 16: Cancer: What Causes It and What Are We Doing About It? Almost every family is directly or indirectly affected by cancer. This presentation, let by Denise Johnson Miller, MD, Director of Breast Surgery at JSUMC, will help students understand the process from cancer development to cancer detection. The workshop (separating males and females) will teach self-examination using anatomic models 6. October 23: How Do You Mend a Broken Heart? Congenital Heart Disease in the 21st Century Dawn Calderon, DO, Chief of Cardiology at JSUMC, will discuss congenital heart disease, a condition that still afflicts many children, adolescents, and adults. However, there have been amazing advances in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. As this is the last session, the second half of the program will be devoted to graduation exercises. Health care is changing at a rapid pace.
