Decree n°2010-1702 • INRETS and LCPC merged on 1 January 2011 • Ifsttar: French institute of science and technology for transport, development and networks • French State-owned research Institute under the authority of two ministries: • Ministry for Higher Education and Research • MEDDTL: Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, Transport and Housing

A long history of collaboration • INRETS and LCPC have shared several research projects for years: • LCPC was specialised in civil engineering • INRETS was focused on research on transport and transport safety • Road safety in particular was a shared research topic • LIVIC (Vehicles-Infrastructure-Drivers Interaction) was a joint research unit • LEPSIS (Management, perception, simulation and driving simulators) • The new alliance between LCPC and INRETS is a logical step up from these previous collaborations • Through their merger the two research institutes will continue to build on their previous partnerships so as to put their shared knowledge to the use of the cities and roads of tomorrow

  5. Key figures • 1268 staff as of 1 January 2011 • Including 250 PhD students • Average length of a PhD thesis : 3-4 years • 25 research units • Budget: 110 Mios EUR (2010) • 74 patents • 226 publications in international publications (2010)

Some outstanding facilities • Geotechnical centrifuge & earthquake simulator • Pavement fatigue carrousel and reference track for characterization of pavement surfaces • Material mixing test facility • Semi-anechoic room • Structures laboratory and cable fatigue testing bench • Magnetic Resonance Imaging device (MRI) • Block Fall Test Facility • Driving simulators • Catapults • Grenoble wheel • Horizontal crash test facility • Etc.

  8. Ifsttar’s strategy • Ifsttar has launched a strategic analysis process • Objectives: • Build a shared vision for our institute between our staff and our partners • Prepare our scientific framework for the next ten years

Ifsttar’s international strategy • Research is necessarily programmed, delivered, published and evaluated internationally • Ifsttar’s aim is to be a key player in transport in terms of international influence and cooperation • Ifsttar’s international strategy is stuctured around several objectives • Contribute to the building of the European Research Area • Contribute to the scientific excellence of the institute • Develop relations with peer institutes especially is OECD countries • Achieve complementarities between research institutes so that Ifsttar can focus on its domains of excellence • Contribute to the French development aid policy • Support French companies in their international activities • Develop cooperation activitie within the Mediterranean Union • Help developing countries develop efficient road safety policies

Methods for international collaboration • Joint articles in international publications • Participation in the European Research instruments and bodies • Students’ and researchers’ mobility • Joint requests for international funds • Look for funding to support our international actions • Scanning tours on selected topics • Long term formal MoUs if needed • Setting up and leadership of European projects, such as FP or NEX projects • Taking part in international associations and bodies • Technical expertise, training • Etc.
