For the purposes of our class… • You belong to one of four philosophical stances: • A. Idealist • B. Humanist • C. Existentialist • D. Realist
1. Health Care as a SystemThe Idealist • …believes it is up to the individual person to be primarily responsible for their own health care with the support of their families…be educated and informed
Health Care as a SystemHumanist • We should have a system of universal health care as they do in Canada and Sweden
Health Care as a SystemThe Existentialist • Health care is a system that exists for the rich and extends minimum benefits to the general populous
Health Care as a System The Realist • Each person need to take from the health marketplace whatever is available for personal health care…free clinics; health department immunizations; discounts and company benefits.
2. Disease should be examined with the understanding:(The Idealist) • The being has the innate ability to cure himself through traditional medical practices
Disease ExaminationThe Humanist • The being can be cured by holistic and traditional practices
Disease ExaminationThe Existentialist • The being is a unique individual who must educate himself in order to achieve disease prevention
Disease ExaminedThe Realist • The Being can be disease free by ultimately using the tenants of rational science.
3. Social LifeThe Idealist • The sympathetic concern for other is central in this life
Social LifeThe Humanist • Actively participate in social life (causes) to understand the best which man has achieved (Green Peace, PETA, Earth First, etc.)
Social LifeExistentialist • Individual man is the only foundation of his own existence and essence (Astrology, Eastern Practices and New Age Movement)
Social LifeThe Realist • People are something to be enjoyed with relish and abandonment
4. StressThe Idealist • Aggressively focusing on our personal ideals and absolute powers will aid in stress management
StressThe Humanist • A lack of balance physically and socially leads to personal trauma
StressThe Existentialist • Man understands his own being and purpose of life in the shadow of death
StressThe Realist • Man is overly entangled in his dependence on things and people. • Must have the best things in life to be successful • He who dies with the most toys, WINS! • Nothing wrong with being rich as long as being rich does not overly control you
5. Physical FitnessThe Idealist • Is beneficial, but the body’s primary excellence is to house a being of spirit
Physical FitnessThe Humanist • Is highly esteemed but not in a hectic or irrational way
Physical FitnessThe Existentialist • Is something to be experienced but only for a temporal moment
Physical FitnessThe Realist • Is a festival of personal control, to use the body for personal or social reasons
6. Men and WomenThe Idealist • Are highly complex beings, different emotionally, physically and systematically
Men and WomenThe Humanist • Are evolving creatures with the ability of equal excellence
Men and WomenThe Existentialist • Are searching beings caught in a nonsensical world of conflict and unknowing
Men and WomenThe Realist • Are self-centered beings able to best co-exist when commitments are minimal
7. Pre-marital SexThe Idealist • Should be avoided as it leads to separation from a more perfect future relationship
