The theme colours of the DVD cover are red(for girls, love, passion ,danger, romance) and blue(for boys, coolness , relaxation) This strap-line shows that the couple have a secret they are keeping from each other and the viewer wants to know what that secret is. They are looking at us not each other, which may show that they have no affection for each other. the red ‘&’ denotes love and connotes that this will be a romantic movie In both the pictures they are holding guns and looking at us this makes the audience feel in danger and interested to know why both of them are in this situation also this suggests it will be an adventure. The mirroring of the body language of the two main characters infers that they are a couple. Angelina is wearing a dress that shows of her legs which is where she is hiding her gun, this looks sexy and attractive to the male audience. The bullet holes in the DVD cover infer that there is going to be a lot of guns and violence in the movie and that it will be an action movie. The name ‘Smith’ is an average name and this looks like an average couple until you see there guns and read the blurb then you realize there’s more than you think to this story which intrigues the viewer. They are standing opposite each other which shows they are on two different sides which may infer to us that they are going to be against each other in the movie. They are both dressed in black, which is the colour a spy would wear. Pg 13

3. The background looks like a beach which is a relaxing place, ironically there is to men claiming to be ‘police’ there and they are pointing guns at you. The woman look vulnerable like her live may have been saved by the ‘Bad Boys’ or she is helping them in there adventure. The title ‘bad boys’ shows that the movie will be about two men who do bad things It says ‘police’ on there jackets but the title infers that they are not normal police, also the fact that ‘martin Lawrence’ character is wearing jeans and trainers(informal clothing) for a police officer. The car is not a police car which is suspicious also the doors and hood are open which looks like they where trying to make a quick get-away. Also it makes it look as if the woman came out from the hood and the ‘Boys’ came from either sides of the car. The strap-line infers that the people in the movie are tough and this is going to be an action movie. The theme colours of the DVD cover represent sun, sand heat and danger. You can see that the men are the hero’s and the woman is the victim because the ‘Bad Boys’ are bigger and come out more at you than the woman who looks like she may be getting protected by them. The title is in a serious looking font and is underlined which highlights its importance.

5. Genre/narrative It is easy to see that the genres of both movies are action/adventure and comedy from looking at both DVD covers. They both include the same traits which are: • Showing the characters using guns • Formal fonts when presenting the title and strap-lines of the movies also both movies strap-lines address the reader in a rhetorical question sort of way and makes them feel intrigued. The narrative of the ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ DVD cover shows a couple, who both have guns but are hiding the from each other which infers to the audience that they are keeping there identity secret from each other also the strap-line ‘they’re more alike than they know’ confirms this. The narrative of the ‘Bad Boys’ DVD cover is a bit more complex because they have police jackets on but also jeans and trainers which are unlikely clothing for actual police which makes the audience feel interested and curious also the woman looks like she may be a love-interest or victim in the movie. The men look lot bigger than the woman on the cover which shows that they will be the hero’s and protect the woman.

Denotation/connotation The denotation of the DVD cover of ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ is a married couple who are both secret agents who have guns and the connotations of the DVD cover is that they both don’t know about each other lives. They look like classy people who are middle class and look like average people but they have secrets. The denotation of the ‘Bad Boys’ DVD cover shows some police who have casual clothes on, they are helping a woman and they look aggressive. The connotations of the DVD cover is that the police officers are of duty or using there status to do something or help someone.

7. Enigmas/representation The Enigmas of the ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ DVD cover makes the audience asks the questions : • Why are they dressed so formally but holding guns? • Are they police? • The ‘&’ symbol is red which makes it look different to the rest of the title so are they together or not? • They are standing opposite each other like enemies but there supposedly married? • Why is ‘Angelina’ wearing a revealing dress and hiding a gun on her leg? Is she undercover? The representation of them are to be the undercover agents who are looking at the audience to say ‘watch out’ and we have secrets but don’t tell the other one. The USP of the ‘Bad Boys’ cover is that it has the two main characters who are pointing guns at us. It makes the audience feel curious about what the DVD cover means, why is the woman there? Why are they on the beach?
