WHAT MAKES IT THE “LORD’S” SUPPER?

The Lord's Supper is a sacred act of worship that centers on honoring and remembering the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, Paul emphasizes the importance of approaching this meal with reverence and unity, reflecting on the weight of Christ's death for our salvation. Worship is our ultimate purpose, as we were created to display God's glory. Through the act of remembering and proclaiming Christ, we nourish our souls and strengthen our faith, reminding ourselves and others of His unwavering commitment to us and the new covenant established through His sacrifice.

  2. Worship “Worship is what we were created for. This is the final end of all existence - the worship of God. God created the universe so that it would display the worth of His glory. And He created us so that we would see this glory and reflect it by knowing and loving it – with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. The church needs to build a common vision of what worship is and what we are gathered to do on Sunday morning and scattered to do on Monday morning.” John Piper

  3. Can Worship Be A Mockery? Yes, it was at Corinth. Hopefully not at Bellaire. Our spirit and demeanor must center on the Lord. Common meals at home. v. 22, 34 How does the Lord’s Supper express our treasuring of Jesus Life and death?

  4. “Remembering” Vs. 24-25 The most important death in history! Do we feel its preciousness? Do we see His agony, His undeserved agony? – Isa. 53:7-8 It’s in remembering that the matzo becomes “His flesh.”

  5. Proclaiming V. 26 “Remember” – bring it to your mind. “Proclaim” – bring it to the mind of others. To each other and the world. Not all proclamations are with the same intensity. Retelling family stories – not all remember the same details.

  6. Nourishment I Cor. 10:16 It’s called a “supper”, but it doesn’t nourish the body The soul needs sustenance, too. Transubstantiation – the Catholic view. Consubstantiation – the Lutheran view. John 6:63 – the Christian view

  7. “New Covenant” I Cor. 11:25 Cup not literally the new covenant Nor is the juice New Covenant is God’s commitment to save thru the sacrifice of Jesus. The Lord’s Supper reminds us to remember Him and live for Him.

  8. No one more worthy of memory. No one more worthy to be proclaimed. No one can strengthen us like He can.
