Guided by facilitator Donna Tinberg, this event will include dialogue circles, group activities, and the development of a white paper aimed at improving education and mental health integration.   1. Welcome! • Please sit wherever you’d like for now. • You will be moving to different tables throughout the day.

  2. Developing Future Models for Michigan Mental Health Services for Children MAASE Professional Development October 8, 2013 Facilitator: Donna Tinberg

  3. What brings us here today? • Michigan Mental Health and Wellness Commission • Established via executive order by Gov. Snyder in February 2013. • Chaired by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley. • Vice Chair is Jim Haveman, DCH Director. • Goal is to make certain Michiganders living with mental health conditions can find a great quality of life, safety and independence. • Bipartisan commission to ensure key recommendations to strengthen our mental health system. • Commission to issue report of findings by 12/20/13.

  4. Charges to the Commission • Assess current public, private and nonprofit services and look into how they can all work together. • Review past commission reports and analyze their progress. • Seek out best practices. • Develop metrics to measure success.

  5. 5 Commission Workgroups • #1: Education, Employment and Veteran Items • Leader: State Senator Rebekah Warren • #2: Housing, Independent Living Support and Long Term Care • Leader: Community Health, Director, Jim Haveman • #3: MH/Physical Health Integration and Service Delivery • Leader: State Representative, Phil Cavanaugh • #4: Public Safety, Beneficiary Rights, and Protection Items • Leader: State Representative, Matt Lori • #5: Societal Impacts, Data/Outcomes, and Stigma Reduction and Awareness • Leader: State Senator Bruce Caswell

  6. Our target for today: • To develop a white paper on the topic of mental health and education which, after approval by the executive board, may be submitted to Sen. Warren’s work group as MAASE’s input to the Commission.

After today • Donna will work with a small group of volunteers to draft a white paper based on today’s work. • Draft document will be sent to all of today’s participants for feedback. • Final document will be sent to MAASE Executive Board for approval. • White paper will be shared with Sen. Warren’s workgroup ASAP but no later than 10/31/13. • White paper will be shared with MAASE membership in a manner determined by the Exec Board.

  11. Dialogue Circles • 4 groups of about ten people each (based on the shape next to #1 on your card) • Sit chairs in circle. No materials and no tables. MOVE NOW. • Process: • Only one voice in the circle at a time. • Listen for deep understanding. • Speaker responds to the question that is posed. • Speaker poses a new question to the person on his/her right. • Repeat until everyone in the circle has had an opportunity to speak. • HINT: Questions should be as open-ended as possible.

BREAK • We will resume in 15 minutes. • During the break: • Obtain a copy of the document you’ve been assigned (based on the letter next to #2 on your card.) • A=MDE Policy on Integrating MH in Schools • B=MH Concept Paper from NASMHPD and NASDSE • C=MAASE System of Student Support • D=Conceptual Models of School-Based MH • E=American Association of Pediatrics School Based MH Policies • Upon return from break, sit at a new table with others who have been assigned the same document. • As time permits over break, you may want to start skimming your document.

  13. Jigsaw Activity • Sit with others who are reading the same document. • You have 25 minutes to read and discuss important points of the document you’ve all read. • When directed, move to a new group of 8 with people who have read different documents. • You have 25 minutes to share the important points of your document and hear the important points of others’ documents.

Envisioning our Desired State • Remain in your same groups of about 8 people. • 3 minute individual brain drain • Form 2 groups of about 4 each: share and consolidate ideas. • Groups of 4 join together: share and consolidate ideas. • 5 large groups share out: • One idea from each group in turn. • Do not duplicate/repeat what has already been said.

  15. Lunch • We will resume promptly at 1:00. • When you return, sit where you are now.

Generating Recommendations • You should be in 6 groups of about 7 people each based on the shape next to #3 on your card. • 5 minute brain drain • Group of 7 shares ideas to develop one set of recommendations reflecting consensus of the group. • Join two groups of 7 to make groups of about 14. Develop one set of recommendations reflecting consensus of the group. • Share out.
