  7. Chapter 8: The Queens Croquet-Ground By Raymond Miles Cook Jr. And Ryan Alan Shockley III

  8. Prior Knowledge • Do you have any prior knowledge of the game croquet.

  9. Orient the Student • Imagine living in the Victorian Age where order and rank is placed among everything else. • Imagine playing a croquet game with a deck of cards.

  10. Rose Garden • Alice enters a garden to see three gardeners painting white roses red. • They were painting the queen wanted a red rose tree. • The king and queen arrive at the garden with all of her soldiers.

  11. Queens Orders • The queen demands to know the identity of Alice so she follows the order and introduces herself. • Queen demands to know the identity of the 3 gardeners. • The queen orders them to be beheaded for painting the roses but Alice secretly hides them in a large flower pot.

  12. The Croquet Game • The queen forgets about the gardeners and invites Alice to play croquet. • The balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets were live flamingos, and the hoops were the card people. • People are playing out of turn and this makes the queen furious.

  13. Cheshire Cat • The head of the Cheshire cat appearance which relieves Alice, because it is the only animal who treats her respectfully. • The cat asks Alice about the queen and Alice says that she dislikes the queen. • The king asks Alice who she is talking to. • The cat and the king don’t get along.

  14. Execution • The king orders for the cat to be beheaded. • The executioner says that the cat can’t be beheaded because he only has a head and not a body. • Alice orders for the Duchess to be brought forth. • By the time the Duchess is brought forth, the cheshire cat has vanished.

Victorian Elements • Many references to nature with roses being painted and the croquet game being outside • Hedgehogs and Flamingos are used to represent the common person being toyed and ordered around by the king and queen • The Queen is very harsh and evil and this represents the reign of Queen Victoria

  17. Literary Connections • Le Morte de Arthur-Nobility and the importance of the king and queen are similar • Animal Farm- talking animals, and the animals represent government officials in real-life Also literary devices!!

Analysis • Alice soon realizes that although the people of the court are only a pack of cards that their nature does not make them any less dangerous • The Court of Cards, like people in real life, rely on rank and costume for their status • The theme of games, and learning their rules, is a central in this chapter
