  1. Would you apply for any of these adverts? Why/ why not? “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honour and recognition in case of success”. Ernest Shackleton, Antarctic Explorer 1914, advert for companions. “Men wanted, to discover where God may be calling them. Exciting journey, challenging year, safe return probable but with new personal insights. No wages, but honour and recognition in high places”. www.austunians.org.uk

  2. The Religious Life is a calling to dedicate oneself completely to Christ and the Church, for the salvation of the world. Religious (Monks and nuns) show this dedication by taking vows. Vocation to the Religious Life Write out the definition of Religious Life. Underline the key phrases in it. What does “salvation of the world” mean? **What sort of promises, or vows, could make you totally dedicated to God? To understand what is meant by religious vocation To explain the vows that monks and nuns take To reflect on the importance of the religious vows

  3. Explain what each of the Vows means, by matching to the correct labels. Why could having married monks or nuns prove very difficult? **Many people think life is about being free to do what you want, success, money. So why do so many people choose religious vocation? Religious Vows Vow of Chastity Vow of Obedience Vow of Poverty • This means doing what your “superior” tells you, as if it was God’s will • This means sharing money, material goods, talents, for the good of the community • This means promising not to have sexual relationships • This means giving your life to all • This means spending time in prayer, to hear what God’s will is, at all times. • This means living simply • This means accepting your duty to do whatever it is your task to do – even sacrificing your life • This means sharing love and friendship with all God’s people, not just a special person

Note down why you think he became a monk. • What does this monk think he is going to get out of “giving it all up for God” ? • Why does this girl think that becoming a nun is a good thing for her to do? Give 3 reasons why people may choose to give up everything for Christ and become monks or nuns **Do you think they are making a good decision? Why/ why not?
