  1. A Greater Glory Haggai 2

  2. Old Temple Luxurious (1 Kgs 6-8) fine cedar and gold New Temple “‘Does it not seem to you like nothing?’” (Hag 2.3c) Change #1 – Temple

  3. Ezra 3.10-13  Hag 2.2-3 • When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD… With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: ‘He is good; his love to Israel endures forever.’ And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy. No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away (Ezra 3.10-13).

  4. Old Temple Luxurious (1 Kgs 6-8) fine cedar and gold New Temple “‘Does it not seem to you like nothing?’” (Hag 2.3c) Yet, “‘The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty” (Hag 2.9a). Change #1 – Temple

  5. Change #1 – Temple • Christ ≈ temple (John 2.13-25) • Christians = temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 3.16; 6.19)

  6. Old Priesthood “idolatrous” (Hos 10.5; Zeph 1.4), engaged in fraud (Mic 3.11), who “profane[d] the sanctuary” and did “violence to the law” (Zeph 3.4). New Priesthood “‘Yes,’ the priests replied, ‘it becomes defiled’” (Hag 2.13b). Cf. Lev 7.19-21 Change #2 – Priesthood

  7. Change #2 – Priesthood • Christ = High Priest (Heb 2-9) • Christians “As you come to him [Jesus], the living Stone…you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood…” (1 Peter 2.4-5).

  8. Old Government ‘As surely as I live,’ declares the LORD, ‘even if you, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off’ (Jer 22.24). New Government …I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the LORD Almighty (Hag 2.23). Change # 3 – Government

  9. Change # 3 – Government • Christ = “King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19.16; cf. 17.14) • Christians = “we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Romans 8.17).
