  1. Biotechnology Labeling Solutions - Is the Lawsuit About To Catch Them? Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Chairman Pat Roberts is pushing to include biotechnology labeling for genetically modified foods in the farm bill. According to him, this biotechnology labeling bill "will help farmers and consumers protect themselves and the biotechnology industry from frivolous lawsuits related to genetically modified food." In a Senate Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Labeling Solutions Review hearings held last month, Roberts grilled FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf about the proposed biotechnology labeling law. Roberts noted that the proposed legislation could impose unreasonable regulations on food manufacturers. According to Mr. Roberts, the Food and Drug Administration's inability to implement the biotechnology labeling solutions because of the numerous demands by Congress and the American people for mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods poses "a serious and obvious problem." According to him, mandatory labeling of foods containing genetic modification organisms is "unnecessary, both from a regulatory and from a policy

  2. standpoint." He also said that mandatory labelling laws "never made any sense" and added that the biotechnology industry "has done everything it can to work closely with the FDA to solve these problems." Mr. Roberts went on to say that he believed the biotechnology industry was "on the verge of great success" adding that the current crop grown with biotechnology was "by far the best." Although the biotechnology industry has put up many claims in its defense, the bill does not provide any national voluntary labeling solutions. The Vermont attorney general has filed a lawsuit against a biotechnology company, claiming that the company's deceptive labeling practices had caused consumers to purchase foods containing the company's genetically engineered growth hormone. As a result of the lawsuit, the company has agreed to a settlement in which it will pay a $150,000 fine. The attorney general will now determine whether or not to file a lawsuit against the other companies involved in the lawsuit. The biotechnology industry is gearing up for a fierce fight against these new bills as they feel that the Vermont attorney general is overreaching his or her jurisdiction.
