World Precipitation

Global precipitation patterns are largely determined by air masses and their movements, which in turn are produced by global air circulation patterns.

World Precipitation

This map uses isohyets - lines drawn through all points having the same annual precipitation. Isohyets are labeled in cm (in.).

World Climate

The climate of a location can be described by its seasonal temperature and precipitation characteristics. The Koppen classification uses these variables to generally classify the Earth's climates. Vladimir Koppen first designed his classification in 1918 and it has been modified many times since then. Go to the next frame to view a more detailed exploration of climate zones.

Interaction of Climate, Vegetation and Soil

These animations superimpose the global climate, vegetation, and soil maps to show the correlation between climate zones, biomes, and soil orders. The next module on the Biosphere and Soils will examine these distributions in more detail. Scroll down to view each of the five animations.
