  2. TheSenate’s Advising Initiative • Goal to stimulate innovation, involvement, and dissemination of lessons learned • 10 faculty driven projects funded for 2 years assigned time (3 units per sem) • Departmental, College and Inter- departmental project

  3. The Policy Window • Senate Retreat Focus Fall 2003 • Strong culture of faculty involvement in campus advising center • Unexpended funds in Senate Budget • Senate Chair and Provost match (100K each) • Senate endorsement

  4. RFP Process • Short 3-5 page proposal • Problem Statement with need and proposed strategy • Method for assessing effectiveness • Plan for dissemination of lessons learned • 17 proposals received; 9 funded yr 1; 1 additional funded yr 2 • Semester meetings, feedback and sharing

  5. The Projects • 2 college based (Business and Health and Human Services) • 1 interdepartmental (Bio Sci and Chem) • 1 intercollege (Educ and Natural Science and Math) • 5 departmental (Econ, Comm Stud, Child Dev, Comp. Sci, and History)

  6. Another Look At Diversity of Projects • 2 focused on pre-major advising, one in pre-health (aka alternatives to med school), one a large college level • 1 linked department to community college students and faculty majors • 1 stimulated faculty involvement in advising where staff had played a prominent role • 1 focused on organization and workload issues • 2 linked web based resources and faculty contact

  7. Still to be done…. • Assessment of Outcomes: What has been the impact on retention and success? • Dissemination of Lessons Learned: Spring Workshop Planned Recognize faculty involvement in advising as key element in RTP

  8. THE SENATE’S ADVISING INITIATIVE • GOAL IS TO STIMULATE INNOVATIONS, INVOLVEMENT, AND DISSEMINATION OF LESSONS LEARNED • 10 FACULTY DRIVEN PROJECTS, 2 YR FUNDING FOR ASSIGNED TIME • DEPARTMENTAL, COLLEGE AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL PROJECTS

  9. POLICY WINDOW OPENS • SENATE RETREAT FALL 2003 • STRONG FACULTY INVOLVEMENT IN CAMPUS ADVISING CENTER • CARRYOVER FUND BALANCE IN SENATE BUDGET • SENATE CHAIR AND PROVOST MATCH • SENATE ENDORSEMENT

ANOTHER CUT AT DIVERSITY OF PROJECTS • PRE-MAJOR ADVISING: ONE IN PRE-HEALTH MAJORS (AKA ALTERNATIVES TO MED SCHOOL); SECOND IN LARGE HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES ORIENTED COLLEGE • OUTREACH TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE MAJORS (CHILD DEV) • INCREASING FAC INVOLVEMENT WHERE STAFF HAD PLAYED PRIOR PROMINENT ROLE • ORGANIZATIONAL, WORKLOAD ISSUES

  13. Still to be done… • Assessment of Outcomes: what is impact on retention and graduation rates? • Dissemination Workshops: planned for spring • Faculty ownership: each one teach one
