Questions about Turkey, EU and Democracy • Filled in by ; Bert Alons ,Annemarijn’s father • a) Do you think that Turkey has to join the EU?No. • b) Why do you think that?Turkey has a complete different culture, the Islam. It is also not a very rich country, so it will cost us a lot of money • a) Do you think that the influence of the EU has to be bigger in cases of national government, euthanasia and the soft drugs policy? No. • b) Why do you think that?I think that each country must keep his own identity, and if the influence of the EU is getting bigger, will our own identity went away. • What would you think if in Europe, even like in the United States, an United States of Europe should come into being?I think that that will be not very good. As I said earlier, I think it is important to keep our own identity and if there comes an United States of Europe, will our own identity went away. • a) What do you think about the introduce of the euro?I don’t like the euro. • b) Why do you think that?Everything is very expensive at the moment, since the Euro, actually. • a) Do you think that the gulden has to come back? No. • b) Why do you think that?I just got used to the euro and the euro has more value then the dollar and I like that.

  8. a) What did you think of the European constitution?I don’t like it. • b) Why did you think that? • I think that the citizens of the country’s will not have anything to say, our influence is then went away. • What have you voted for?I have voted against the European constitution. • Do you think that the regional inequality would disappear? No, there will be always problems about regional inequality. • a) What do you think about the agricultural government from the EU?I think that it costs us to much money. • b) Why do you think that?Because to much money, millions of euro’s, are spent on it, from our taxes. 9. Questions about Turkey, EU and Democracy Filled in by: Denise and Patty, classmates of Annemarijn and Laura 1.a) Do you think that Turkey has to join the EU?No. b) Why do you think that? We think that because we’ve heard a lot of things from our parents. For example that Turkije stil hasn’ t have a total freedom for people and press, we think that’s neccasary if they want to become a member of the EU. We’ve also heard that there’s no freedom of religion, and that’s kind of strange. Cause isn’t it so that if we say something bad about Islam that they’ll tell us that it’s not acceptable, but if you say that you’ re a Christian there, then the change is big that you’ll get smacked to say it in a nice way. 2.a) Do you think that the influence of the EU has to be bigger in cases of national government, euthanasia and the soft drugs policy?Yes I think so. b) Why do you think that?If we want to be an unit, and that is what the governments want, then we have to work together in each and every way. And that means also on the territory of euthanasia, soft drugs policy and government. 3.What would you think if in Europe, even like in the United States, an United States of Europe should come into being?I think that would be a good idea, it’ll probably make us even stronger and make us more an unit than now. And that is exactly what we want, right? So I think that the idea of an United States of Europe should be at least considered, it’ ll also help us get over our differences and work together as one.

  10. a) What do you think about the introduce of the euro?I think it has his good and bad sides. b) Why do you think that?. Because everything had become much more expensive since the introduction of the euro. Think about food, gasoline, everything had become even more expensive than it already was. But at the order side it had made us more an unit. 5.a) Do you think that the gulden has to come back?Yes and no b) Why do you think that?Like I’ve said before, the euro has a good and bad side. The gulden was less expensive and everybody in Holland knew the value. Now I still here a lot of people saying that they wish that the gulden was back, but the euro has made us a better unit and that was what we wanted. So it also has a good side. 6.a) What did you think of the European constitution? I was for the European Constitution.b) Why did you think that?Because I’ve heard a lot of good things about it and it would make us a better unit, and that’ what I want. 7.What have you voted for? Well I’m just a kid of 16, so I haven’t vote. But if I could I would vote for Groenlinks. 8.Do you think that the regional inequality would disappear? If we would all work together as one then I think that the regional inequality could and would disappear. But only if nobody would be left behind. 9.a) What do you think about the agricultural government from the EU?I don’t know a lot about this subject, but I think that it’s a good government. b) Why do you think that?Because there are a lot less homeless people, we’re all trying to work together for a better world. And there is a lot of food for everybody in the EU, so that’s a plus.

  11. a) Do you think that Holland is a real democracy?Yes I think so. b) Why do you think that?Because it’s a kingdom where politicians, chosen by the people, are in charge. And that’s what they call a real democracy. 11.a) Do you think that a democracy is important?Yes I think so. b) Why do you think that?I think that because in a democracy everybody above eighteen has a voice that he or she can use for voting for a politician. People can say what they wanna say without getting shut of anything. a) What is a democracy according to your view?A democracy according to my view is a kingdom where politicians, chosen by the people of the country, are in charge. Also there’s a freedom of religion, for the press and most of all for the people.

  12. Questions about Turkey, EU and Democracy Filled in by: Djamila Labib, student of Baken Park Lyceum 1.a) Do you think that Turkey has to join the EU?Yes. b) Why do you think that?Turkey is a part of Europe, so I think that it has the right to join the Europe. 2.a) Do you think that the influence of the EU has to be bigger in cases of national government, euthanasia and the soft drugs policy? No. b) Why do you think that?I think it s going well the way it is now. 3.What would you think if in Europe, even like in the United States, an United States of Europe should come into being?**** 4.a) What do you think about the introduce of the euro?I think it was a good idea. b) Why do you think that?. Because you can use euro every where in Europe. 5.a) Do you think that the gulden has to come back? No. b) Why do you think that? It’s going fine with the euro. Euro is better than dollar now.

  13.   a) What did you think of the European constitution? / b) Why did you think that? / 7.      What have you voted for?I voted against 8.      Do you think that the regional inequality would disappear?Yes. 9.      a) What do you think about the agricultural government from the EU? / b) Why do you think that?/ 10.  a) Do you think that Holland is a real democracy?Yes. b) Why do you think that?Everyone may vote, to select the government. 11.  a) Do you think that a democracy is important?Yes. b) Why do you think that? There is no chance of a civil war, because the people have selected the government. a) What is a democracy according to your view?Government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

  14. Must Turkey join the EU? • We think that Turkey must not join the EU. We think that because Turkey has a whole different culture. Their culture is more orientated on the East and the Arabic culture. Their religion is the Islam and that is a whole different culture that we have. The women and men have a very traditional role and that is not good if you ask us, because men and women must be equal. They must have the same rights and that is not the case in Turkey. The Islam is also very dominant and we think that Turkey with his culture will influence whole Europe with not very nice measures. The Islam can overrule the whole of Europe. • It is also not a very rich country. The citizens are mostly poor. If Turkey joines the EU, must the other countries pay for Turkey. That will cost us a lot of money. The Netherlands are paying a huge amount of money already, and if Turkey joines the EU will the amount of money even be bigger. The citizens of the Netherlands are paying a lot of taxes already and that will be even more if Turkey joines the EU. The cicitzens of Turkey are poor and can’t pay for the EU and that is not fair toward richer countries, because we also work hard for our money, even as hard as the citizens of Turkey do, but we earn more and so we have to pay more, bur that is not fair, the amount has to be equal for every country. • Turkey has also not important materials wich are important for the rest of Europe. We can’t import a lot of agricultural products from Turkey because Turkey does not has it. • It is also already possible to go on vacation to Turkey on an easy way, so that will also not change if Turkey joines the EU. • So, as you can read, we think it is not a good idea if Turkey joines the EU. Maybe it is possible if the country is more developed, beacause than it will contribute to a better economy for the rest of the EU and Europe.
