  4. John Wesley Strength of religious belief was firmly rooted in John Wesley’s family history. Samuel Annesley, his grandfather, was a nonconformist Presbyterian pastor who abided by his principles through difficult times. (Possibly served as chaplain on the man-of war Globe in his early career.) John White, his great-grandfather, was a Puritan from youth. Very decided about his religious principles, he was a lawyer, an “honest, learned, and faithful public servant”.
