  2. Carpenters Connect Home2Home Community Channel

  3. Carpenters Connect, is an advanced broadband infrastructure which gives all wired up households on the Estate, free unlimited access to a service that supports video on demand, interactive TV, local TV, digital TV, games, Internet, email and a UK leading "PC on your TV" service that allows the use of MS Office software through the TV set.

  4. The Home 2 home channel is the Carpenters Estate’ own TV channel and web-site accessible via the main menu of the Carpenters Connect service. The H2H channel, includes online discussions, news, notice boards, resident produced videos. The aim is to improve these current options to further encourage positive usage and generate overall increased involvement from all residents.

  5. Objectives • The objective of the H2H channel on the Carpenters Estate is for the local residents to have the ability to access their Estates’ own TV channel, which gives access to a wide range of information on local issues. In addition to this, it can also present itself as one solution to involving and training local people. • People Matter! Is a very important feature in the success of the H2H channel among its residents is that its’ ethos centres on empowering local people to be involved in community activities and decisions which affects all residents.

  6. It links our community • The TMO board maximises the benefits of the service by the H2H channel filming the TMO Board and general Public Meetings. • A recent resident survey conducted early this year indicates high tenant satisfaction with the H2H channel. Regular updating and revamping of the web site and associated functions continues to maintain interest and constant usage by local residents.

  7. Its’ continued success is evident by the fact that the local school is also wired-up to receive the Estates channel services. In the last 6 months, the Local Police shop has also been wired-up with the Carpenters connect service too. The aim is to enable an effective link between the local residents and the Police.

  8. With positive input by the local health and education organisations on the Estate, the channel becomes an effective information tool covering a wide range of informative and interesting subject matters. • Accessibility to the H2H channel through a set top box via the residents’ own TV in the comfort of their own home ensures community participation from all wired up households to include those from different cultural backgrounds, different age groups and those who may be experiencing different levels of deprivation and exclusion.

  9. The use of film videos made about local people, local issues and in some cases filmed by the very people living on the Estate is a positive opportunity to involving local people and breaking down potential barriers of people accessing opportunities to becoming more involved. • The Carpenters Connect wired-up infrastructure is one that can be used in other Estates too. An updated version of the service was recently launched in Tower Hamlets Union Warf Estate.

  10. Over 350 households in Carpenters TMO have access to the channel and can watch more than 80 programmes starring local people talking about local issues. The following DVD shows the services available through the infrastructure and a medley of films that includes:- • “Meet the Neighbours, people spoke purely about what interested them and featured more than 100 local residents

  11. The history group was set up for older residents to record their memories of day gone by. • Jasmine gave birth to triplets (naturally conceived) and after appearing on the Home 2 Home channel she was contacted by a couple of local residents on the estate, keen to offer their help.

  12. “Living the High Life”- some residents on the estate were angry with the living conditions in the tower blocks and expressed their views and all comments were also put to Newham Council who then responded on camera. (Also shown on the Community Channel on Sky) • Newham Council have commissioned masterplan on Carpenters estate. Home 2 Home film every stage of the masterplan process keeping residents updated.

  13. Home 2 Home is also a social enterprise and takes commissions from outside bodies to produce videos. Neighbourhood Renewal asked for a series to be made reviewing their projects. • Home 2 Home takes everyone seriously. “Sarah & Joanna” are our local reporters and cover all sorts of stories. Here is one a local football match they reported on.
