  13. Supervisees • Allow proper time for supervision • To supervise someone appropriately, is very time consuming, especially if they are internship level. Just to write and initiate a supervision plan can take up a lot of time.

  14. Co-Dependency in Supervision • If your supervisee is out to “fix the world” then as a supervisor you are in for it! • This subordinate counselor may very well be an adult child of an alcoholic. • Spend time helping the counselor work through co-dependency issues that could harm a client.

  15. Potential Supervisees May Not Be in Recovery • How far has your supervisee healed in their own journey. • Anticipate situations and develop learning tools for supervisee.

  17. Therapeutic Voyeurs Clayton an VanNostrand (Ph.D.’S) refer to these types of counselors, as “therapeutic voyeurs”. Counselors are under supervision to treat clients for alcohol and drug abuse disorders not to use clients for their own personal issues.

Screen for Past Malpractice • You may still decide to supervise someone that has been a defendant in a malpractice suit, however you will want some assurances that the potential supervisee will act within legal and ethical mandates. • Seek legal counsel prior to initiating relationship with supervisee.

  21. Crises In Supervision • Crises may arise during the supervision relationship. Some crises can be handled by using the agency policies and procedures manuals. Personal crises may take some counseling skills on the part of the supervisor. • Keep in mind the rights of a supervisee.

  23. Depression • Can come from feeling inadequate in counseling. • Secondary trauma from client stories.

  24. Job Burnout • Job burnout may occur and probably will occur at some time during the supervision. • Most times, some time away from counseling will alleviate the problem. • In some cases counselors may need some professional help.

  25. Ethical Dilemmas May Cause Crises • Counter-Transference. • Competency issues must be dealt with immediately.

  26. Overwhelmed • Intern take on too much. • Secondary trauma can effect family life and personal crisis.
