E2 Energy to Educate: Project Profiles • University of Maryland Watershed Team • Team won top honors in the 2011 US Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon • 200 students from schools of architecture, engineering, and business collaborated to design and build a cost-effective, energy efficient, sustainable home • Design features: solar panels, electrical sub-panels, electric nonmetallic tubing, mini-split heater pumps, liquid desiccant waterfall system and electric radiant floor • “I hope [visitors] will see how much more efficiently homes can be built. From simply using more energy-efficient lights and appliances to building a home from scratch with thicker insulation, there are many options out there for how to “green” a home on any budget. E2 Energy to Educate: Project Profiles • Solar One, New York • Implemented the Green Design Lab in NYC schools, working directly in 15 schools and reaching an additional 109 schools through the Sustainable Schools network. • Through Energy Challenge, reduced average school energy usage by 6.8% • Students conducted experiments on electricity, including circuits and soldering techniques to building model solar race cars and constructing model wind turbines and measured their electrical output. • Students designed and implemented a School Sustainability Project, including school gardens and greenhouses, lighting improvements, and solar PV technology on school campuses. • GDL energy unit assessment scores show nearly 40% improvement.
