  3. Foundational Ideas of Responsive Classroom • Our best teaching is grounded in knowledge of how children learn • Knowing students developmentally, individually, culturally inform all parts of classroom practice • Social and academic learning go hand in hand • All children want to learn and can learn

  4. Three Domains of Responsive Classroom • Engaging Academics • Effective Management • Positive Community • Positive sense of belonging and significance • Shared sense of purpose • Shared rituals, routines, and traditions • Sense of safety • Joy/fun

  5. Our continued focus this year: Positive Community The first component to be implemented is Morning Meeting • Greeting • Sharing • Activity • Morning Message ** The meeting should take place in this order, however; sharing can be done at a different time of the day.** 10-15 minutes

  6. Greeting • Purpose of the Greeting • Sets a positive tone • Provides a sense of recognition and belonging • Helps children learn names • Gives practice in offering hospitality

  7. Sharing • Purpose of Sharing • Helps develop the skills of caring communication and involvement with one another • Extends the knowing and being known that is essential for the development of community and for individuals’ sense of significance • Encourages habits of inquiry and thought important for cognitive growth • Provides practice in speaking to a group in a strong and individual voice • Strengthens vocabulary development and reading success

  8. Activity • Purpose of Activity • Contributes to the sense of community culture by building a class repertoire of common material –songs, games, chants, and poems • Fosters active and engaged participation • Heightens the class’s sense of group identity • Encourages cooperation and inclusion

  9. Morning Message • Purpose of Morning Message • Eases the transition into the classroom day and makes children feel excited about what they’ll be learning • Develops and reinforces language, math, and other skills in a meaningful and interactive way • Builds community through shared written information
