What is a rocket? • A rocket is a device driven forward by a force that escapes from a rear vent • Have many different purposes: fireworks, going into space, missiles, and just for fun!
History of Rockets • First Rockets • Early 1200s • Used by Chinese against Mongols • Brought to West by Mongols • 1600-1900 • Newton’s 3rd Law: “Every action has equal and opposite reaction • Modern Rocketry: • Age of space travel and human exploration • Rockets also were now used heavily for warfare
Aerodynamic Forces • There are four aerodynamic forces that our rockets will encounter: • These act through the center of pressure
Weight • Is the mass of an object relative to the amount of gravity acting upon it
Thrust • Thrust is the force which moves the rocket through the air, and through space • In our case we are using air to provide our thrust • Is also the force which balances out the object’s weight
Lift • Lift is a side force that is used to stabilize and control the direction of the rocket’s flight • Is usually much lower than the amount of drag on a rocket
Drag • Drag is the resistance to the object while it’s moving
Problems • Our group needed to design two rockets using: • Paper • Balsa Wood • Glue • One needed to achieve a high altitude • The other needed to achieve a long range
Construction of Rockets • We used a NASA rocket simulator to come up with the best dimensions for our rocket
Final Dimensions • Based on the simulator we came up with these dimensions • Altitude • Nose: Length is 2.5 in., Diameter is 1 in. • Body: Length is 11 in., Width is 1 in. • Fins: 3, Length is 2.5 in., Width is 1.5 in. • Range • Nose: Length is 3 in., Diameter is 1 in. • Body: Length is 11 in., Width is 1 in. • Fins: 3, Length is 2 in., Width is 1 in.
Expectations Range Altitude We expect our altitude rocket to fly 140 ft. We expect our range rocket to fly 235 ft.
