  2. The 2nd Commandment • YOU SHALL NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD IN VAIN

  3. Meaning of the 2nd Commandment • Tells us to respect God’s name because it is very Holy • When we say God’s name, we acknowledge His presence, the SHEKINAH – God himself. • It is a privilege to know God’s name so we cannot use it in vain. • God is speaking to us when His words are read.

  4. How should we act? • We should respect God’s name. God revealed Himself to Moses as “I AM WHO AM”. This means He is the Lord of the past, present and future. • We should receive the Sacrament of Baptism and be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. • We should respect God’s name when we pray the Lord’s prayer or when we participate in the Holy Eucharist.

  5. What should we not do? • We must not use God’s name in sorcery • We must not curse people. Ex. I wish you die today. • We should reject profanity (the use of sacred words in impatience, mere surprise) Ex. Diyos ko po!, Susmaryosep (Hesus, Maria, Joseph) • We should reject blasphemy (disrespecting God’s name) Ex. “God damn it” , “For Christ’s sake” • We should not have false oaths. Ex. I promise in God’s name that I will not play computer.

  6. What should we not do? • We should avoid sacrilege (violating sacred places) • We should avoid perjury (giving of false testimonies under oath). Ex. I swear under oath that he killed his wife.

  7. Summary • All persons are sacred and they deserve respect. • We should respect God, religious people and all other human beings. We have to remember that we are created in the image and likeness of God. • We also have to respect places of worship like the churches, chapels, the holy land and the apparition sites. • We also have to respect the sacred statues of Jesus, Mary and the saints because we honor what they represent.
