  1. Cell History

  2. What is a cell? Give 2 examples

  3. History tour of the cell . . . .

  4. Discovery of the Cell • 1. Robert Hooke • 1665 • English scientist • Observed cork under microscope

  5. Cork Activity Cork oak tree

  6. He said cork consisted of “great many little boxes”. • It reminded him of small rooms in which monks lived…so he named them . . . CELLS

  7. Next . . . 2. Anton van Leeuwenhoek • 1674 • 1st to observe living cells (in pond water) • He concluded life seemed to be everywhere.

  8. More important findings 3. 1838—Schleiden: • All plants are made up of cells 4. 1839—Schwann (think swan) • All animals are made up of cells 5. 1855—Virchow • All cells come from pre-existing cells ***then the Cell Theory is born!!!***

  9. Video from: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-wacky-history-of-cell-theory

  10. Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells • Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all living things. ALL cells come from preexisting cells.

  11. Cell Diversity Structure-to-function Activity

  12. Cell Diversity • SHAPE – • The shape of the cell is based on the function the cell needs to perform. • Different types of cells have different shapes.

  13. Cell Shape *

  14. Red blood cell White blood cell

  15. Cell Diversity • SIZE – Cells vary in size from macroscopic to microscopic

  16. Size examples Macroscopic cells Microscopic cells What is the largest cell??? The smallest cells = bacteria Ostrich egg

  17. Cell Diversity • INTERNAL ORGANIZATION: • cells contain organelles to organize their inside material • Organelles= tiny organs

  18. prokaryote Eukaryote

  19. Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes (see other notes on board)
