  2. UNIT 1: MY SCHOOL In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • Names of teachers and peers • Layout of classroom and purpose of classroom stations • Layout of whole school • Classroom jobs and how they are allocated • Classroom rules • The importance of working together

  3. K2, UNIT 1: MY SCHOOL 14th – 23rd May 2013 THE BIG IDEA: The purpose of this unit is to establish routines for the school year which will create an environment conducive to learning. Becoming familiar with the classroom layout and the school grounds will help children to feel safe which will allow them to be confident. Understanding the boundaries of the classroomand what is expected of them will allow childrento be responsible for their own actions from the outset. This orientation module will introduce children to all they need to know toflourish in K2 and will set the tone for the coming year.

  4. K2, UNIT 2: BODY AND MIND 27th May – 22nd June 2013 THE BIG IDEA: This unit will lay the foundations for healthy lifestyle choices. Learning about the importance of their bodies will motivate children to take care of themselves. Understanding the difference between healthy and unhealthy food and knowing the importance of exercise will allow children to make wise decisions. Understanding their emotions, how to communicate about them and how to manage themselves will pave the way for emotional intelligence, which is now recognized to be at least as important as IQ for a successful and fulfilling life.

UNIT 2: BODY AND MIND In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • Names of parts of the body and how they connect • The consequences of choosing healthy/unhealthy foods • How to identify healthy/unhealthy foods • The importance of exercise • That all emotions are ok but not all behaviours are ok • How to calm down from strong emotional states • How to identify emotions in others

K2 UNIT 3: COMMUNITY 24th June – 19th July 2013 THE BIG IDEA: Children will gain a greater sense of identity and responsibility by learning about the communities they are part of and what their role within that community is. Learning about jobs will inspire them to think about possibilities in their future and help them to gain an appreciation for the ways in which people serve their communities. Learning about family will enhance their understanding of roles and responsibilities within the family unit and highlight the importance of interdependency.

  7. UNIT 3: COMMUNITY In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • Names of family relationships • Responsibilities within the family • Names of different jobs and what they involve • How we can help people in our community

K2, UNIT 4: A Bug’s Life 29th July – 16th August2013 THE BIG IDEA: Learning about the life cycle of bugs will introduce children to the concept of investigating change, which is a fundamental principal of science. By learning more about how bugs live, children will deepen their appreciation of nature and broaden their concept of what is meant by life. By creating their own projects for the science fair, children will learn to enjoy investigation and take pride in presenting their discoveries.

  9. UNIT 4: A Bug’s Life In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • What bugs eat • Where they live • How their lifecycle works • How to identify them

K2, UNIT 5: OUR WORLD 19th August – 13th September THE BIG IDEA: By learning about different countries and cultures in the world, children will gain a greater sense of the bigger picture beyond their immediate lives. It will help them to understand the differences between themselves and other children in the school in terms of language, background and habits. It will generate a sense of interest in the variety that exists in the world and lay thefoundations for them to become responsible global citizens. Learning about cultures provides an opportunity to learn through cooking and crafts, which involves skill development.

  11. UNIT 5: OUR WORLD In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • What continents and countries are • About food in Thailand/England/Other countries • About weather in Thailand/England/Other countries • About clothes in Thailand/England/Other countries

  12. K2, UNIT 6: BUDDING DAY PREPARATION 16th September – 27th September THE BIG IDEA: Budding Day provides children with an opportunity to take stock of what they have learnt so far. Presenting their own work will nurture self confidence in the children and allow them to take pride in what they have achieved so far. Preparing for a show gives the children the opportunity to experience a different kind of creative process.

  13. UNIT 6: BUDDING DAY PREPARATION In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • What we have learnt so far and what we enjoyed the most • Which areas the children need to focus on to keep improving • How to present work which has been created

  14. K2, UNIT 7: BACK TO SCHOOL 21st -25th October THE BIG IDEA: This is a re-orientation unit after the term break. Reflecting on the classroom rules and routines which were agreed upon at the beginning of the year will refresh children’s knowledge of what is expected of them and provide an opportunity for them to assess their behaviour in the previous term and make goals for themselves.

  15. UNIT 7: BACK TO SCHOOL In this unit, students will learn about/how to: Refresh classroom rules and responsibilities Make personal goals for the second term

K2, UNIT 8: NATURE 6th January – 24th January 2013 THE BIG IDEA: Children will develop a greater appreciation for their environment and their connection with it by learning about a variety of elements of nature. Learning about day and night, seasons and weather will increase their ability to sequence events and make predictions and plans for the future. Learning about a variety of living creatures will give them an opportunity to develop observation skills and make links between themselves and the other creatures we share Earth with.

  17. UNIT 8: NATURE In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • About the moon and sun / what makes day and night • About different types of weather • About the seasons

K2, UNIT 9: ANIMAL PROJECT 18th November – 6th December 2013 THE BIG IDEA: Children will have the opportunity to learn about an animal of their own choice and to produce their own personal animal project. The element of choice in this unit will cultivate an interest in learning independently. Learning about different types of animals and creating a project based on an animal of interest will broaden children’s identification with nature.

  19. UNIT 9: ANIMAL PROJECT In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • What various animals eat • Where various animals live • Different categories of animal • What different animals look like

  20. K2, UNIT 10: WELL BEING 6th January – 24th January 2014 THE BIG IDEA: This unit will highlight the relationship between the well being of the environment and the well being of ourselves. The focus on farming will give children an appreciation for the effort that goes into producing healthy food and will give them a sense of connection with nature.

  21. UNIT 10: WELL BEING In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • How fruits and vegetables are grown • That taking care of ourselves and others makes us feel good • Practical skills in gardening

  22. K2, UNIT 11: STORY PROJECT 27th January – 13th February 2014 • THE BIG IDEA: This unit will encourage an early interest in literature and inspire children to enjoy books. It will provide an opportunity to develop listening skills, imagination and creative thinking. Sharing stories in a safe environment will develop confidence and provide a platform from which to use new vocabulary and information that has been leant throughout the year.

  23. UNIT 11: STORY PROJECT In this unit, students will learn about/how to: Listening skills Imaginative skills Literacy skills How to structure a story

K2, UNIT 12: REVIEW THE YEAR/ BLOSSOM DAY PREPARATION 17th February-7th March 2014 THE BIG IDEA: This unit is the time to revise everything that we have learnt in K2, to reflect the year and evaluate our progress. Blossom Day provides an opportunity to consolidate the learning that has taken place and to celebrate it. This encourages a joy in learning for learning’s sake and gives the children a sense of pride in their achievements.

  25. UNIT 12: REVIEW THE YEAR/ BLOSSOM DAY PREPARATION In this unit, students will learn about/how to: • Which was our favourite topic this year • In which areas we have improved the most in • What our goals for K3 will be • How to present create a shadow puppet show
