  2. HISTORY • Originates from a dance ritual called Kasilonawan, headed by a katalonan • lasts for nine days • feasting, drinking, singing and dancing • held in the home of a datu

  3. HISTORY • Important: value fertility  wealth or abundance • A barren woman was part of the lowest class of Philippine society • Performed so that women would become productive

  4. HISTORY • Blessing of fertility is given to all who perform the ritual • Linga is the god that became the center of the ritual

  5. PLACE AND PEOPLE OF ORIGIN • Place of Origin • Obando, Bulacan B. People of Origin • Franciscan Missionaries • introduced a trio of saints: • Saint Claire • Saint Paschal • Our Lady of Salambao

  6. PLACE AND PEOPLE OF ORIGIN • because of the introduction of these saints by the Franciscan Missionaries, along with the Kasolinawan, the Santa Clara (part of the three-day festival & Obando Fertility Rites) was established • paved the way to the Santa Clara celebration

  7. PURPOSE • Santa Clara (Saint Claire) - the patron saint of  the childless • The Santa Clara is held every May 18: • to appeal to Santa Clara and ask for children • to express their gratitude for the blessings they receive
