  1. WHAT VEHICLES DON'T NEED INSURANCE IN THE UK?

  2. WHEN DOS YOU NEED • When you drive a car on highways and in public buildings, you must have automobile insurance. If your car is held off the road and ruled off the road, the vehicle must not be insured (SORN). The rule is known as 'constant application of insurance.‘ Otherwise, you might: • Get a set EUR 100 fine • Face a criminal case and a potential overall fine of £1 000 to get your car tightened, confiscated or lost • Who drives the car doesn't matter – you can be penalized if you're the licensed keeper. In addition to the penalties you get, you have to pay the premiums.

  3. • If a car has been licensed with a registered keeping agent or has been classified as "commercial" with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). You shall not exempt automobiles that you maintain for your own purposes to van MOT test centres.

  4. SORN • You cannot abandon a vehicle without insuring it or filing for a SORN if you have a car that you do not operate. You have to ask here when to declare the car off the lane. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is advised by the statutory off-road notification SORN that the vehicle is now off the path. • You won't be allowed to use a vehicle if you have a SORN, so it also implies you won't have to insurance or charge it. Notice that if it was not registered with SORN, you couldn't just stop paying tax on the vehicle, you would be punished by £80. • You must keep your vehicle in a workshop, garage or private land while you have a SORN.

  5. SORN DECLARATION A SORN statement can be made: • GOV.UK online by fax on 0300 123 4321 or 0300 790 6201 by phone • By post, fill out and return SORN V890 Form to the DVLA. • If the vehicle's keeper isn't licensed yet, you should submit by postal and submit a request form to the respective section of the V5C log book. • Only if you are a licensed car manager can you register online. On the tax renewal letter (S11), you also need 16-digit registration number or the 11-digit reference number on the log book (V5C).

  6. SORN DURATION • Within 4 weeks of receipt of the final system the DVLA will affirm your car's SORN status. If you have submitted by postal or mobile and you have registered on site, you will get a confirmation email and an acknowledgement. Note that only after receiving this confirmation, your car will be taken away from the lane, so you have to maintain your car taxable and covered until that time. Your SORN lasts until your car is taxed, scrapped or exported indefinitely. The SORN is not applicable between holders, you don't have to upgrade it.

  7. ENDNOTE • And if the vehicle is damaged or destroyed in a storm, you do not need to insure for cars considered off-road, so you will have to pay for the damages yourself. If you are interested, it could be necessary to take out a 3rd party, fire and burglary insurance cover if the cost of any maintenance to the vehicle is impaired.
