The challenge… “Internet is socially shaped and socially embedded with the practices of everyday” Sonia Livingstone, UK children go online • Divide hidden behind the digital divide – low internet users are less creative, effective users • Increased opportunities bring increased risks • Emerging technology shapes risks & vulnerability • Awareness messages are built on expert knowledge • No man is an island in the global world • The media needs educating too

The European response Provide an umbrella, multi-cultural structure to: • Facilitate creation of synergy at national level • Track emerging technology to signpost key issues • Provide a virtual library of internet safety material • Generate a European approach to internet safety • Promote development of information literacy

Lessons learned • Importance of benchmarking • Relevance of academic & research findings • Need for qualitative input - focus groups • Multi-stakeholder approach to keep apace • Implementation of actions in broader educational context • Events (e.g. Safer Internet Day on 7th February) to reinforce impact • Synergy vital at ALL levels

Key events & milestones • Safer Internet Day 2005: 30 countries, almost 100 events; launch of story telling contest • December 2005: launch of illustrated story book by children for children • Safer Internet Day 2006 – worldwide blogathon, 37 participating countries, over 200 events • Online repository for resource and good practice sharing • Six training workshops for mutual knowledge • building
