The introductionThe top of the hamburger bun The first 30 seconds are probably the most important. You must grab the attention of the audience and engage their interest in what you have to say in your speech. BUT HOW CAN I DO THIS?
There are many ways. What about the following? • Raise a thought-provoking question • Make an interesting statement • Recite a relevant quotation • Recite a relevant joke
Time to brainstorm! • Make a list of as many things you can think of that you may want to present your speech on.
The bodyAll the fillings in the middle This is the largest part of the speech Put things in a logical order so that it is easier to follow Remember to use descriptive language
About 3-5 discussion points Elaborate on each discussion point and then link them to each other to show continuity
The base of the burger • Summarize the main ideas in the speech, rounding off the discussion • Let the audience know you are going to finish without saying it
Finish with a bang! Make the audience stand up and cheer before you can even say “Thank you.”
Students use a bubble map to brainstorm ideas to finish their speeches • Students work on their own conclusions • Students do “buddy reading”

Small Group Activity – Impromptu Speeches • Each person to have a go – brainstorm once they have finished what worked and what didn’t • Give your friends some positive and constructive ideas about how they can prepare for a really great speech!

Legs shoulder width apart • Knees slightly bent • Chin up • Nose in line with belly button • Your hands should never cross the middle of your body or go in your pockets
It is essential to make personal contact with everybody • DO NOT just focus on 1 spot • DO NOT look at the same people the whole time
VEP Volume • Vary it Emotion • Let the audience feel what you feel • Show how you feel Pauses • Give them time to think about what you have said • Remember to breathe • Don’t try to catch a train

Facial expressions Use your face to emphasize what you say Activity Teacher say a certain emotion loud and students have to show that emotion
Hand gestures • Be aware how it will look to the audience • Don’t use the same one again and again • Not too many
Activity 1 Students practice hand gestures to go with the following phrases: • The meal I ordered is too small • So we can either use a fork or a spoon • I want all of you to help me stop child labor • All around the world, people are hungry • I want you to leave here with 3 main ideas
If you don’t believe it, neither will they • Be positive and energetic • Show your confidence with a smile
No A4 paper – only small cards that will fit in your hand • Keywords / points • Don’t rely too much on it
Some last minute tips • It is normal to be nervous. Just try to focus on your speech and not the people. • Everybody makes mistakes. Just move on if you have made a mistake. • Visual aids can help you deliver your message. Just don’t overdo it. • Be yourself, allow your own personality to come across in your speech. • APPROPRIATE Humor is always a good tool.
Pairs Activity • Students work in pairs and do impromptu speeches. • Use Peer assessment scoring guides.
