  1. Times Tables Information Session Wednesday 7th November 2018

  2. Aims of the Session • To become familiar with the expectations set out in the National Curriculum about times tables. • To be aware of the new times table check. • To be aware of the expectations of times tables learning at GSA and understand how you can support your child at home with these. • To understand the importance of times tables and their impact of children’s success in mathematics learning. • To become familiar with our new Times Tables program – Times Tables Rock Stars.

  3. Statutory Assessment – Online Multiplication Check • From the 2019 to 2020 academic year onwards, schools in England will be required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to year 4 pupils. • Selected schools will pilot the check in June 2019. • The aim, according to the DfE, is to help schools identify pupils who have not yet mastered their tables. • Children will have to answer 20 multiplication questions (no division facts) and will have 5 seconds to answer each question.

  4. Times Tables at the Good Shepherd

  5. Expectations • Year 1 – x2 • Year 2 – x2, x5, x10 • Year 3 – x3, x4, x8 • Year 4 – x6, x7, x9, x11, x12 • Year 5/6 – all facts revisited and includes division facts

  6. 1/8 of 48 = 6 1/6 of 48 = 8 60 x 8 = 480 80 x 6 = 480 8 x 0.6 = 4.8 48 ÷ 8 = 648 ÷ 6 = 8 60 x 80 = 4800 6 x 0.8 = 4.8 8 x 6 = 48 0.6 x 0.8 = 0.48 6 x 800 = 4800 0.06 x 800 = 48 600 x 8 = 4800

  7. TT Rock Stars • We will be using the paper versions in school to give children regular practice of their times tables. • At home, we would like the children to access the online version. This can be done on a computer or an iPad (the app is free to download).

  8. Online Games • Garage mode – children will have 1 minute to answer the times tables questions. • Garage mode is a teacher set mode. Each class teacher will set the times tables the children need to work on. • This will either be the times tables they are expected to know by the end of their year group and/or times tables your child needs to practice.

  9. Online Games • Studio Mode – children will have 1 minute to answer questions from any times table up to 12x12. • They should play this mode regularly because it will test your rock speed (more on this later…).

  10. Online Games • Sound Check Mode • This is an emulator of the times table check that will be introduced in 2020. • Children will be given 20 questions and will have 5 seconds to answer them. • Children in Year 3 and 4 will find this useful!

  11. Online Games Festival and Arena Modes – these are multiplayer games where the children can play with other children in their class or other children around the world!

  12. Rock Speed When the children play the Studio mode, it will update their rock speed. It will work out the average time it takes them to answer a questions. The quicker they get, the higher the rank they will get.
