Split Brain • Why did Victoria choose a split brain? • Since she was 6 she had seizures (lose conscience and uncontrollably shake) • At 18 the seizures returned with more intensity and by 27 she decided to have a surgery that would sever her connection between the left and right Hemisphere • This is done when medicine has no affect

  3. Split Brain • Split-brain operation involves cutting the wide band of fibers, called the corpus callosum– connects the two hemisphere (200 million nerve fibers) • The procedure stops the spread of the seizures from spreading to the other hemisphere

  4. Split Brain • Michael Gazzaniga found that on the damaged side individuals seemed to be blind to what they saw (ART exam of HEART with Victoria)
