  2. EVENT #1: Bread Riots and the Women's March on Versailles (Oct. 1789)

  3. Why was it important? Why was it significant? 1.) Example that brought together all aspects of the revolution; symbolic of the power of POPULAR MOVEMENTS 2.) Ended independent authority of Louis XVI; removed feeling of invincibility that covered the monarchy 3.) End of Louis XVI’s resistance to the revolution 4.) Symbolized a new balance of power

  4. EVENT #2: Civil Constitution of the Clergy (July 1790)

  5. Why was it important? Why was it significant? 1.) Subordinatedthe Roman Catholic Church in France to the French government 2.) Turned the clergy into employees of the STATE 3.) Established an election system and a pay rate for the clergy * PREVIOUSLY… tithes and monastic vows were abolished and Church property was nationalized! What does this term mean?

  6. Factions and Radicalism …in the National Assembly LEFT(radicals) CENTER RIGHT Moderates Wanted SOME change! Conservatives Supported MONARCHY! Revolutionaries DID NOT want Monarchy!

  7. EVENT #3: The Royal Family’s Escape! (June 1791 – well, sort of…)

  8. Why was it important? Why was it significant? 1.) Turning point where hostilitytowards Louis XVIand MarieAntoinettebecame more evident 2.) Provoked charges of treason which ultimately led to his execution in 1793 3.) Alerted other European monarchs (who feared that the revolution would spread to their countries and result in instability)

  9. EVENT #4: New Constitution (Sept. 1791) Constitutional Monarchy

  10. Why was it important? Why was it significant? 1.) First written constitution in France (constitutional monarchy) What did it do? * Constitutional separation of powers * King had to share power with the Legislative Assembly(veto and ability to select ministers) * Formed a system for regular elections – ACTIVE citizens could VOTE!

  11. EVENT #5: Rise of the Paris Commune (Aug. 1792) …the SANS-CULOTTES! Why was it important? Why was it significant? 1.) Marked a shift towards radicalism and VIOLENCE in the French Revolution!
