Background Information about the ICJ • Established in 1945 by the UN charter • Located in the Peace Palace in the Netherlands • Two official languages: French and English • Main function: to clarify legal disputes by giving advisory opinions • Cases heard: whentwo countries cannot settle the dispute between themselvesand accept to go to court • Fifteen judges • Two advocates for each side • Vested with the power to make its own rules

Executive Board and Responsibilities President: TugceTunalilar - Chairing the sessions - Keeping track of the process Vice- President: Yusuf Erkli - Chairing the sessions in case of the President’s absence. - Organising the members of the court, making sure that all are on the right track Registrar: - Communicating with each member of the court and answering any questions from them - Deliveringvows and swearing in the witnesses - Keeping all records for the case All together write the court report on the recommendation of the judges

The Role of the Advocates • Main role: to represent their country’s arguments • as convincingly as possible Before the Court Hearing • Research the issue, the points of international law and the • country concerned • Gather information for their arguments, with evidence • Choose appropriate witnesses and prepare them • Agree on stipulated evidence together with the opposing • advocates During the Hearing • Make opening speeches • Present supportive evidence (but at our JMICJ, advocates will choose from a stack of evidence selected beforehand by the President and Vice President of the Court) • Write a closing speech, summarizing their whole argument

The Role of the Judges • 15 judges in the court • No previous knowledge about the case • Main role: to observe the case, consider the evidence presented, listen to the arguments ask questions to both parties and to witnesses impartially • Right to question the evidencesubmitted • Discussion session at the end of each day • Contribute to the writing of the report of the hearing • At the end of the trial: final decision and voting process

Expectations from the Participants: • Respecting all the rules and behaving accordingly • No distress: respect • Patience (especially considering issues of restricted time allowance) • We also ask for all of you to do your job efficiently so that we dont have any rocky moments while the court is in session

  7. Schedule • Day 1: • Workshop • Advisory Panel (JMICJ • and Committeestogether)(?) • Day 2: • Opening speeches • Presenting evidence • (6 pieces each at most) • Day 3: • Presenting Witnesses (2 each) • Closing speeches.
