  4. Purpose of the Evening • Review the course selection process • Outline the Graduation Program • Identify Career Programs/Industry Training options • Provide Post-Secondary information

Course Selection Process • Course selection evenings • Classroom visits/consultation (Jan.-Feb.) • Students select courses • Completed on-line (BCeSIS) at school • Course verification • Done by parents online (BCeSIS) with student login • Last day for online changes March 30th • Course changes after March 30th • All changes must be completed through counsellors by June 28, 2011 • No course changes will be allowed in September 2012

  9. General Academic Support • Your subject teacher – your first level of support • Math tutoring – 3rd floor • Monday, Wednesday - 3:00 – 4:00 and Thursday - lunch • SUMMIT Program – Mr. McLean room 209 Monday – Thursday 3:10 – 4:00 (drop in or student may be formally referred)

  12. Graduation Program • Graduation requirements in British Columbia are completed over a three-year period • These requirements include Grade 10, 11 & 12 courses only

  14. Graduation ProgramHighlights • Students are required to complete one course (4 credits) in Fine Arts or Applied Skills in Grade 10, 11 or 12 • No limit to the number of Board Authority Authorized (BAA) courses or external credits used towards graduation

  18. Grade 12 Program Required: • English 12* or Communications 12* • Grad Transitions Electives: • Students select their own unique set of courses around focus areas and post secondary plans • Career Programs reflect these focus areas

  19. Graduation Transitions • 150 minutes of physical activity per week documented in grades 10, 11 and 12 • Healthy Living Plan • Completed in PE 10* • 30 hours of documented work/volunteer experience • Graduation Transition Plan • Exit Interview

  20. Career Programs • Work Experience (30 Hours) • Work Experience 12A (90 Hours) • Workplace Training • Secondary School Apprenticeship • Ace-It/Industry Training • Transition to Trades Training Foundation Program • Independent-Directed Studies (IDS)

  21. Work Experience (30 Hours) • 30 hours of documented work experience • All students must complete as a required component of Graduation Transitions program • Career Programs Advisors are responsible for tracking

  22. Work Experience 12A • A 4-credit Grade 12 elective completed over a two-year period (approximately 1 week in each year) consisting of 90 hours of focused work experience • Aimed at students with a genuine interest in exploring a particular career area • Frequently completed during school time (but can be scheduled during non-instructional time) • CP Work Experience is a 4 credit course. Students usually receive a study block to complete their timetable but can request a ninth course • 30-hour Work Experience can be counted towards credit for Work Experience 12A

  23. Workplace Training(extension of WEX 12A – 120 hrs +) • Students interested in a specific career area • Replaces student’s elective courses • Students graduate with a Dogwood Certificate (“Diploma”) • Can be scheduled as full or half days on job site

  24. Secondary School Apprenticeship • Aimed at students interested in pursuing a career in the trades • Consists of 480 hours of paid work experience • Students graduate with a Dogwood • Students are encouraged to have their own job contact for this program but CP Advisors can assist with placements

Ace-ItIndustry Training ACE-IT programs provide a unique opportunity for student to earn both graduation credits and industry certification Programs include: • Construction Electrician* Hospitality Management* • Digital Sound Production Professional Cook Level 1 • Hairdressing Fitness Leadership • Automotive Collision Repair Graphic/Media Arts • Automotive Service Technician Metal Fabrication • Automotive Refinishing Film and Broadcast • Computer Networking Technician Cabinet Making • Carpentry Theatre Technician • Plumbing Millwright • Painting & Decorating

  26. Transition to Trades Foundation Program • Aimed at grade 10 or 11 students interested in pursuing a career in the trades • General overview of: carpentry, electrical, machinist, mechanics, plumbing/piping, welding • Students also trained and certified in industry-recognized certification • Location: Cariboo Hill Secondary School

Independent Directed Studies (IDS) • Allows students to pursue curriculum in more detail based on the learning outcomes of an existing Ministry authorized course • Earn additional credits outside timetable • Develop skills to prepare for post-secondary and future career • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills • Available to students in all grades
