The English first tried their longbows during the Battle of Crecy (1347), which was a disaster for the French. • Had unexpected effect of bringing madness into the English Royal family. Henry VI’s inability to rule brought about the loss of the Hundred Years’ War as well as the onset of the English War of the Roses. • Joan of Arc played crucial role in the French’s Victory. Captured by the British and her death by the stake galvanized the French, who expelled the British from the continent by 1453. • The Hundred Years War was paused due to the Black Death that struck Europe in 1348, stopping the war for 8 years.
