  1. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL Submitted by Jack Daley CAA, Athletic Director Gilroy High School January 22, 2009 Southern Conference Realignment

  2. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Structure • Create new league with 2 divisions. Names to be determined. • AD’s and coaches would make the determination for divisions based on as much historical data as possible and outlook to future program strength. Final approval by Board of Managers. • Frequency of movement between divisions determined by AD’s and Coaches. Final approval by Board of Managers.

  3. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Rationale • The “Equity” league structure allows each school to compete in a division tailored to the strength of each sport it competes in. • Allows for easier placement for new schools. i.e. Christopher High School. • Eliminates the need for supplemental leagues. (with exception of Field Hockey) • Eliminates the need for constant realignment.

  4. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Areas of Concern • Schools will be forced up to play “Big Schools.” • Transportation distance. • Traditional Rivalries. • Automatic Qualifier playoff distribution.

  5. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Response to Areas of Concern • Schools will be forced to play “Big Schools” • League structure will allow for equity of competition, especially as schools grow or shrink or strength of programs change. Schools will not be locked into a spot. Size of enrollment does not always equate to strength of program.

  6. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Response to Areas of Concern • Transportation distance • While some distances will be farther, most of the schools play each other in many sports already by choice or membership in supplemental leagues. i.e. Boys’ Volleyball and Water Polo.

  7. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Response to Areas of Concern • Traditional Rivalries • Traditional rivalries can most often be worked into the non-league schedules • of schools if the rivalry truly has merit.

  8. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Response to Areas of Concern • Automatic Qualifier playoff distribution • As the Leagues are changed to divisions based on strength or program, the best programs and athletes will be competing against each other in divisional play. As a result the automatic berths in the CCS tournament must be distributed to match the strength of the divisions.

  9. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Response to Areas of Concern • Automatic Qualifier playoff distribution • As a League, the Board of Managers can distribute CCS automatic berths as they see fit. While a division may lose an automatic spot, this could allow schools an opportunity to truly compete for a League title.

  10. Proposed New Equity League combining MBL and TCAL • Current Supplemental Leagues • Girls’ Golf: TCAL host • Girls’ Water Polo: TCAL host • Boys’ Water Polo: TCAL host • Field Hockey: MTAL host (new league would not have enough schools to host) • Boys’ Golf: (In place this year) • Boys Tennis: (some current MBL teams) • Boys’ Volleyball (TCAL)
