  2. Note the irregular stems for these verbs! All these verbs take the same set of endings. poder pud-  (hizo, 3rd pers. sing.) poner pus-  saber  sup-  venir vin- hacer  hic- z e (no accent) iste o (no accent) imos isteis ieron  quis- querer * dij- decir  traer traj-  eron* All irregular preterit verbs whose stem ends in j drop the i in third-person plural.

Why did you put the towel there? ¿Supiste dónde está el estadio? Did you find out where the stadium is? ¿Vino Julio al partido ayer? Did Julio come to the game yesterday?

Quise patear el balón, pero no fue posible. I wanted (tried) to kick the soccer ball, but it wasn’t possible. Ya te dije que no estoy de humor para un pícnic. I already told you that I’m not in the mood for a picnic. Las chicas trajeron comida a la fiesta. The girls brought food to the party.

  5. More irregular preterit forms The preterit form of hay (from the verb haber) is hubo for both singular and plural. Hubo is the only preterit form of haber that is normally used in modern Spanish. haber  hubo Hubo refers to things that occurred, or things or situations that existed for a specific period of time. Ayer hubo un partido de fútbol en el estadio. Yesterday there was a soccer game in the stadium. Hubo más de 50.000 espectadores. There were more than 50,000 spectators. Hubo dos accidentes en la misma esquina. Two accidentes occurred on the same corner.

  6. More irregular preterit forms The verb hacer has particular importance when used in the preterit. It asks about what someone did. ¿Qué hice? What did I do? ¿Qué hiciste? What did you (tú) do? ¿Qué hizo? What did he, she, you (Ud.) do? ¿Qué hicimos? What did we do? ¿Qué hicisteis? What did you (vosotros) do? ¿Qué hicieron? What did they, you (Uds.) do?

What did you do last weekend? Fui al cine y cené con mi novia la noche del sábado. I went to the movies and had dinner with my girlfriend Saturday night. Notice that, just as in the present tense, questions asked with the verb hacer are generally answered with some other verb.

Preterit tense–to manage (to do something) Después de mucho memorizar, pudimos recitar Versos sencillos, de José Martí. After a lot of memorizing, we managed to recite Versos sencillos, by José Martí.

Preterit tense–to fail (after trying to do something) Juan trató de leer el documento, pero no pudo hacerlo sin sus lentes. Juan tried to read the document, but without his glasses he failed to do so.

  13. Special meanings in the preterit querer Present tense–to want Ana quiere escuchar música en su estéreo. Ana wants to listen to music on her stereo. Preterit tense–to try Ana quiso escuchar música, pero su estéreo se descompuso. Ana tried to listen to music, but her stereo broke.

Preterit tense–to refuse Juanita me invitó a su fiesta, pero no quise ir. Sus fiestas son muy pesadas. Juanita invited me to her party, but I refused to go. Her parties are boring.

Preterit tense–to find out, to learn Los alumnos supieron justo anoche que hay un examen hoy. The students found out just last night that there is an exam today.
