  1. Chapter 12.10 Human Genetic Analysis AP Biology Fall 2010

  2. Chapter 12.10 Objectives • Explain how pedigree are constructed • Distinguish between genetic abnormalities vs. genetic disorders

  3. Human Genetic Analysis • Data on human inheritance is displayed in pedigrees

  4. Human Genetic Analysis • Human genetics is difficult to study • We live under variable conditions in diverse environments • Humans mate by chance, and may or may not choose to reproduce • Humans live as long as those that study them • The small family size characteristic of human beings is not sufficient for meaningful statistical analysis

  5. Human Genetic Analysis • A pedigree is a chart that shows genetic connections among individuals • The analysis of family pedigrees provides data on inheritance patterns through several generations • Knowledge of probability and Mendelian inheritance patterns is used in analysis of pedigrees to yield clues to a trait’s genetic basis

  6. Human Genetic Analysis • Some traits are deviations from the average • Genetic abnormality: term applied to a genetic condition that is a deviation from the usual, or average, and is not life-threatening • Person born with 6 digits on a hand • Genetic Disorder: is more appropriately used to describe conditions that cause medical problems • Cystic fibrosis • Syndrome: recognized set of symptoms that characterize a disorder • Abnormal glandular secretions, tissue, organ damage

  7. Review • Can you read a pedigree chart?
