  1. Triangles, Congruence and Angles Slideshow 37, Mathematics Mr Richard Sasaki Room 307

  2. Objectives Recall the meanings of “line”, “line segment” and “ray” Understand the meaning of congruence Use triangle and angle notation to show congruence

  3. B Line segment AB () Review B Line AB () A B Ray from A to B () A A Note – Often, we can just say AB when line segment is implied.

  4. B B B Vertices A A Try to show a vertex when a line passes through a point. This is optional with start and end points. A

  5. For the triangle below… Triangle Notation We can name it… C B Any combination is fine but it’s best to read in alphabetical order if possible. A

  6. We call this angle… Angle Notation I will not accept . Why not? Y Z Y is a vertex, not an angle. If we label the angle , we can use . X

  7. Between 00 and 90o Acute Types of angle – Part 1 Between 900 and 180o Obtuse Between 1800 and 360o Reflex

  8. Exactly 90o A right-angle Types of angle – Part 2 Exactly 180o A Straight angle Exactly 360o A full rotation

  9. a – obtuse, b – reflex, c – right-angle d – acute, e – acute, f – straight-angle Answers - Easy

  10. 1. 3. A 2. C Answers - HARD B M A B A B C D 4. We can’t be certain about which side of vertex B that the angle is on. C Label the angle on the acute side.

  11. What does congruence mean? Congruence Congruence is when two things (shapes, angles or lines) are the same size and shape. We use this term for mostly shapes. We would say that the two shapes are congruent.

  12. Where is the line of symmetry on this isosceles triangle? Congruence This splits it into two congruent right-angled triangles. Note – Congruent triangles can be rotated or flipped.

  13. In terms of vertices, which triangles are congruent? Congruent Triangles is congruent to What is the symbol for congruent? A M B C So we can say…

  14. No. Triangle or quadrilateral. Answers quadrilaterals line 2 parallel trapeziums or size shape edges angles 7 Parallelogram
