  1. Computer-Aided Translation Tools and Resources By Zhu Bingying

  2. A Translator's Workbench/Workstation • A 'workbench' or 'workstation' is a single integrated system that is made up of a number of translation tools and resources such as: • a translation memory • terminology databases& a terminology management system • an alignment tool • a tag filter • electronic dictionaries • spell and grammar-checkers

  3. electronic dictionaries translation memory Translator’s workbench spell and grammar-checkers terminology databases (termbases) alignment & filter tool

  4. Why bother using CAT tools? Translation quality Translation speed Intensity of working Productivity

  5. CAT Tools • SDL Trados • MemoQ • Déjà Vu X • Omega T • Wordfast • ……

  6. Alignment & Filter • Alignment (语料对齐)is the process of binding a source-language segment to its corresponding target-language segment. The purpose of alignment is to create a new translation memory database or to add to an existing one. (WinAlign) • The corresponding pairs of source and target-language segments (句段)are called translation units. • A filter is a feature that converts a source language text from one format into another giving the translator the flexibility to work with texts of different formats. (markup language such as HTML)

  7. HTML code in a web page: <b><a href="http://www.stats.uwaterll.ca/%Epmarriott/STAT231/"> STAT 231 Empiracal Problem Solving</a><br> &nbsp;<br> Office Hours for STAT 231<br> </b> <ul> webpage without HTML code: STAT 231 Empiracal Problem Solving Office Hours for STAT 231

  8. Translation Memories • Translation memories are databases that store translated texts together with the corresponding original texts. Texts are stored in translation units, not as wholes. • TM technology works by reusing previously translated texts and their originals in order to facilitate the production of new translations.

  9. Advantages: productivity-enhancing, cost-saving;consistency in style and terminology. • Many texts, especially technical documents, contain numerous repetitive elements. Since many products are based on previously existing products, the corresponding documentation is also based on previously existing documentations. (user manuals, online help for software programs, lab reports) • The translator can recycle the previous work so as to reduce time and costs as well as improve quality and consistency.

  10. Terminology Management System • Helps professional translators to record and then integrates terminology into their translation work. • To maintain a database, to manipulate terminology resources, to identify multiple equivalents, to establish terminological resources for dictionaries and glossories.... • Multiterm by Trados

  11. Trados • Trados (TRAnslation & DOcumentation Software) was established in Stuttgart, Germany by Jochen Hummel and Iko Knyphausen in 1984. Hummell and Knyphausen initially set up Trados as a Language Service Provider (LSP) following their decision to tender for a translation project for IBM. • Since its entry into the translation software market in 1984, Trados (acquired by SDL in 2005 and now known as SDL Trados) has since become a widely recognized name within the industry.

  12. Resources • Trados 2011 试用版 • 欧洲委员会翻译司官方记忆库-22种欧洲语言 • 微软术语库;各专业(农医数电等)中英术语库 • 下载地址:www.xiangqun.net

  13. Trados 与MS office集成界面

  14. Trados User Experience • 优点: • 1)Trados 可以集成到MS office 中使用,使用非常方便。 • 2)A.
