  1. What did they criticize?

  2. Writing boot camp

  3. First – the question • Now that you have watched Shrek, what is it that the directors Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson satirize about contemporary society? In your response, be sure to identify multiple examples from the film to prove your point. • DECODE – what does your thesis have to answer?

  4. second– the thesis • What does your thesis need to include? • What words must you avoid? • WRITE IT! Mrs. A’s AF example: In Animal Farm, George Orwell satirizes the way in which Stalin took absolute power in Russia, the lack of education faced by the majority of the population, and the way the government ruled by fear.

  5. Third– the proof TREE! TRANSITION REASON EXAMPLE EXPLANATION

  6. T - Transition • Opening sentence – transition from your thesis into your first piece of evidence. Connects ideas together. Mrs. A’s AF example: One of Orwell’s most biting criticisms is of Stalin’s forceful method of taking power in Russia.

  7. r - reason • May be part of the opening sentence, but it must include the general introduction to the example. May be context. Mrs. A’s AF example: Throughout the allegory, Orwell shows Stalin’s egregious error in taking power by showing how Napoleon forcefully kicks out Snowball.

  8. e - example • Provide either direct evidence (a quotation) or a thorough summary of the moment to provide information to the reader about your proof. Mrs. A’s AF example: During a farm-wide meeting on the topic of the windmill, Snowball takes the stage. As he speaks, the dogs, trained from infancy by Napoleon, come out to drive Napoleon out of the barn and off the farm.

  9. e - explanation • Explain that evidence, darn it. This should be the longest part of your paragraph. You need to tie this back to your topic sentence AND your thesis! Mrs. A’s AF example: Through his use of the dogs, Orwell shows how oppressive Napoleon has become in his quest for power. The dogs aggressively dismiss Snowball as he offers up promises for hope and a less stressful future for the animals, highlighting the terrible nature of Stalin’s stolen rule. Rather than complete the election and meeting, Napoleon takes absolute power without an opponent. His manipulation of the pups further shows Orwell’s criticism for the event.

  10. REPEAT!!! Keep repeating your TREE until you’ve used your examples for that sub-category!

  11. Leave the tree with a leaf (gET IT??? • Don’t forget to conclude that sucker…you need to provide your NEXT paragraph with a jumping point, and that strong conclusion will keep it rolling to the next idea. Mrs. A’s AF example: Orwell’s criticism of Stalin’s abuse of power is only one thing that he criticizes throughout the text.
