Mrs. Mazza Sixth Grade-Language ArtsSocial Studies WELCOME!
About the Course: • All lessons are Common Core/ Standards based • We are a National AVID Demonstration School • Language Arts: • reading, writing, conventions of language usage (both written and oral), and listening and speaking skills. • Social Studies: • Early hominid groups and the ancient world
Materials: • Students must come every day with several pencils, paper, their planner, completed assignments, and a 2 inch binder with dividers (one for all classes) • Recommended- • Highlighters • Eraser
Please check your student’s binder and backpack often! • Organization is the key to success in secondary school • We only have 52 minutes in class, and 39 on Wednesdays. Students must be able to quickly find and switch between assignments and classes
Planners: • Planners will be checked daily in Advisory. Students should be writing the daily agenda for each class and any homework assignments. • Please ask them to check planners each night to make sure that they are completing all assignments
Homework: late homework will not be accepted • English • Daily* 5-a-Day Grammar or Review • Students use their Homework Handbook to complete the 5-a-Day. • After 6-8 weeks, we will switch up our review sheet. • Daily* Reading Log • Students will complete 20 minutes of reading per day. Book Block time can not be used to meet this requirement. Students will then complete a reading log each night based on what they read that day. • Social Studies • Homework may be assigned based on need (things that weren’t finished in class, study for tests)
A.R. • Students are required to meet their goals by the end of each triad starting triad 2 • Whatever percentage of the goal was met, will be their grade.
Aeries • Check Aeries weekly • Gradebooks are available online at any time • Students know how to log in and can show parents grades
Absences: • Students are responsible for make up work They use the following process: • Ask a neighbor to copy their planner • Extra worksheets are located in the Extra Work basket 2 days to make up work for each day of absence or it is reduced credit • See me after school if there is something that is unclear, needs to be collected, or if a make up test needs to be scheduled
Absences continued • It is extremely difficult for students to catch up in their classes if they are frequently (2 days per month or more) absent • According to americangraduate.org- • “By sixth grade, a chronically absent student is shown to have a significantly higher chance of dropping out of high school.” • “Improving attendance is an essential strategy for reducing achievement gaps.”
Late or Missing Assignments: • Homework will not be accepted late. • Late or missing classwork may be accepted for reduced credit.
Cell Phones: • Cell phone use is not permitted in my classroom. Cell phones will be turned in to the front office for pick-up by a parent, as outlined in the student planner/handbook, if used during class time.
Classroom Management Plan: • Classes can earn marbles for their marble jar. Once the jar is filled, the class will receive a prize and we will start over! • If a class is not being respectful, responsible, or safe, marbles may be taken from the jar.
Communication: • The best way to reach me is by e-mail- smazza@hemetusd.org
