Employment Opportunities • Fastest growing occupations for bachelor’s graduates 1994-2005 (USBLS) • Systems analysts • Computer engineers • Occupational therapists • Physical therapists • Special education teachers • IEEE-USA Study projects the demand for electrical, electronic, and computer engineers to grow by 28 % (2.3%/year) by the 2007 • US Department of Commerce has determined that over 95,000 new computer scientists, systems analysts, and programmers will be needed each year while noting that only 24,533 computer baccalaureate degrees were awarded in 1994.

  4. Department Vision • To be the DFW region leader in the CS/CSE field • To be among the top three CS/CSE programs in Texas • To be the state leader in selected areas of expertise • To be ranked among the top fifty Ph.D. programs nationally in CS/CSE

Mission • The mission of the Computer Science and Engineering Department is to serve the needs of the north Texas region, the state, and the nation by providing quality educational and innovative, relevant research programs in computer science and engineering. The department will strive to offer first-rate undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education opportunities; conduct research and develop technology in selected areas; and facilitate technology transfer for the betterment of the quality of life.

Historical View of CSE at UTA • 1966 -- First computer science courses offered (through IE Department) • 1973 -- Master of Science in Computer Science degree established • 1974 -- First MS CS degrees awarded • 1976 -- Undifferentiated Ph.D. program established • 1977 -- Computer Science Section of IE Department established • 1978 -- Bachelor of Science in CSE degree program established • 1979 -- First BS CSE degree awarded • 1980-- Computer Science and Engineering Department established • 1981 -- First Ph.D. in CS awarded • 1983 -- CSE undergraduate program accredited by ABET, reaccredited in 1989 and 1995 (first accredited CS or CSE program in Texas) • 1989 -- Software Engineering Center for Telecommunications established • 1990 -- Honors Program in Parallel Processing (HiPP) established • 1994 -- Master of Software Engineering program established • 1995 -- CSE undergraduate program accredited by CSAB (first dual ABET/CSAB accredited program in Texas) • 1996 -- UTA ranked 20th in the USA in computer science research expenditures [$8,641,000] • 1997 -- UTA ranked 9th in the USA in computer science research expenditures [$15,187,000] • 1998 -- First offerings of CSE courses at distance via the web

Other Changes • CSE 1310 -- Intro to Computers and Programming will introduce the C language through standard control structures and, hence, will no longer cover Pascal. • CSE 1320 -- Intermediate Programming will cover concepts beyond standard control structures in C and C++. • CSE 1325 -- Advanced Object-Oriented Programming Using C++ will focus on object-oriented concepts and their implementation using C++.
