Preliminary Results T. Erin Cox xFOCE seminar 19 November 2013
Installation in May 1m Control 2m Reference Experiment Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
Shiny used to monitor sensor data http://shiny.obs-vlfr.fr/efoce/datavis/ Developed by Jean-Pierre & Alice Webb with input from eFOCE members
P. oceanica abundance & density Example- Shoot density (mean ±SE) Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
P. oceanica shoot variables Example- Leaf blade length (mean ±SE) Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
P. oceanica biomass Relationship can be used to estimate biomass in chambers or plot Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
Incubations • We performed 3 types of incubations • 1. Whole Community – entire chamber incubated • 2. Seagrass – shoot enclosed • 3. Sediment – sediment with rhizomes enclosed • Changes in O2, Dissolved Inorganic Carbon, & Total Alkalinity were measured • To determine impacts to production, respiration, and calcification rates
Tested many designs 3 incubation bags per chamber or plot 4 hrs light & 8 hrs darkness Collected shoot to express as dry weight Seagrass Shoot Incubations
Sediment Incubations Tested many designs 1 fixed location per chamber or plot, over 3 days (n = 3) 24 hrs incubation
Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E Variable Net Production Seagrass Sediment n = 1 – 3 (mean ±SE) Treatments x Month
Whole community incubations Photosynthesis vs Irradiance curves
Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM)Ability to Harvest Light Energy in P.oceanica n = 5 – 6 (mean ±SE) Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
Rapid Light Curve Parameters n = 5 – 6 (mean ±SE) Reference = R Control = C Experiment = E
Other data collection • Sediment for • Diversity of microbes • Pigments • Mineralogy • Community of Foraminifera • C/N content isotopic ratios • Seagrass for • Calcified Epiphyte Mass • Epiphyte community abundance & diversity • Phenolics • DMSP • C/N content & isotopic ratios • Benthic profiler • Settlement & Recruitment Tiles
Relocated Sites in November • 5 months of data collection • Repeated physical disturbance from sampling & installing electronics • Intense & repeated collections • Site no longer representative of the meadow
Future Actions • Eliminate all nets • Dive tanks no longer sit on benthos • Eliminate the sediment & seagrass incubations • Reduce the collection (# & frequency) of leaves & sediment
